Default Mumbai under terrorist attack?

Surprised there is no thread yet. Looks like a well organized terrorist group has attacked multiple sites and taken lots of hostages in a hotel and hospital.

The army's been mobilized and there's fighting in the streets and what not. Crazy.

It's also on every news station if you've got a TV..

Mumbai: Almost all the locations attacked by suspected terrorists in south Mumbai Wednesday night were preferred hangouts of foreign tourists. Here is a list of the nine places under attack:
  • Leopold Cafe in Colaba, a favourite hangout with the tourist crowd in south Mumbai (Firing)
  • Hotel Taj Intercontinental, a five-star hotel in south Mumbai (Firing)
  • Hotel Trident (formerly Hotel Oberoi), a five-star hotel in south Mumbai (Firing)
  • Chhatrapati Shi###i Terminus (Formerly Victoria Terminus), the headquarters of Central Railway and a World Heritage Building in south Mumbai (Firing)
  • Bade Miyan Gali behind the Hotel Taj (Firing)
  • Mazagaon (Explosion)
  • Vile Parle suburb in north Mumbai (Explosion)
  • Hotel Marriott in Juhu has also been attacked
  • A boat with explosives was found on Girgaum Chowpatty

A detailed list of places that were attacked. This is just crazy news.....

Seeing some of the chaotic spectator videos, I'm surprised at how many people are just standing/sitting around. I guess there's so many attacks going on, no one knows where to run to get away? Deer in the head lights?

WTF, why is stockwell day talking about vaccinations in afghanistan?

I am actually from Mumbai (moved to Canada 10 years ago) and have lots of relatives living there including my brother and my whole family is really concerned since we haven't been able to get a hold of him. We have got hold of some of our family members from there and the others we are still trying to get a hold of. This is a very well organized attack on several parts of the city. At the Taj Hotel, which is like the main luxury hotel in Mumbai, there have been 7 blasts inside the hotel so far and they have suspected 20 people held hostage. They have hostages also at another luxury hotel, The Oberoi and also in Cama Hospital they have held hostages and they have apparently killed 2 of the hostages so far.

This is just terrible news even if its "not your backyard"

Edit: Just got a hold of my brother living there and he said its absolute chaos in the city. The Indian Army has been deployed to try and get a hold of the situation.

When i went there on business 2 years ago to the week, we stayed at the Taj, hung out at the Oberoi, and drank at Leopold's. There were A LOT of expats at those locations.

Infamy is my bet.

I would guess if they are attacking places where foreigners are known to hang out, I would guess an isolationist bent? I'm not certain of India's religious makeup - widely varied, I believe, so it may be the "traditional" Muslims hate the west stuff, or it might not.

From my readings, the terrorists want the Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) to stop raiding Muslim communities. And by raiding, I mean breaking in doors looking for terrorist suspects, not as in plundering like Vikings.

What better way to stop the ATS from harassing Muslims than for Muslim extremists to embarrass the ATS?

Seems like an endless cycle to me. Terrorism means a further crackdown on the Muslim communities means more terrorism means further crackdowns means .... reminds me of stories I've heard from Ireland in the past....

On that note, they actually killed the Chief of ATS Hemant Karkare while he was carrying out the rescue mission.

The attackers specifically asked for people with American and British passports.

Latest developments from the bbc:

In the latest developments:

  • Commandos have surrounded two hotels, the Taj Mahal Palace and the Oberoi, where gunmen are reported to be holding dozens of hostages, including foreigners
  • Police say an explosion heard inside the Oberoi was from a hand grenade, and flames and a massive plume of smoke are billowing from the Taj Mahal hotel
  • The head of Mumbai's anti-terrorism unit and two other senior officers are among those killed, according to local TV
  • A witness told local television that the gunmen were looking for people with British or US passports
  • The US and the UK have both condemned the attacks and Washington says it is "assessing the hostage situation"

Interesting, this almost something out of Tom Clancy (Urban Operations for those PC gamers that remember).
While Terrorist activity and attacks aren't new to that region, this would be a dramatic escalation. The other fear now is that other terrorist groups will see this as a success and try their own coordinated attacks.

My girlfriend's best friend's uncle and aunt are currently barred up in their hotel room at the Trident (Oberoi). The hotel is on fire and they fear the rest of their tour group was killed in the lobby. There are some reports they made it out but apparently they haven't yet. Really really scary, they have a 9-year-old daughter here in Australia. I am so worried about them. David and Vinka Clemmett are their names, if anyone sees any updated news on them please post it here.

Yeah saw that one but it seems they haven't been evacuated or rescued yet.
