Default School drops support for charity that seeks cure for "racist" disease

Further proof that civilization is doomed based on how dumb our next generation of leaders are.

Simply unforgivable....and completely insane.

Student association president Brittany Smyth said the motion came about because the association has been contemplating rotating the beneficiary of Shinearama to different charities each year instead of giving the money to a single charity.
This chick is kookoo for cocoa puffs. Shinerama IS a CF fundraiser fer chrissakes.

I ran the Shinerama program for my college in 1984, it was an amazing learning experience. They flew a bunch of us from various schools across the country to just outside Barrie Ont for orientation and to get educated on the disease that at that time had kids lucky to live beyond the age of 17 or 18. Many were dead by age 12. Now that has doubled. Its been an amazing progress.

And who cares if it affects only caucasians...it freaking kills them. I guess white folk don't deserve to find cures for thier maladies any more huh?

Just a stupid and sad reflection on things IMO.

This gets a small article in the paper. Can you imagine if they had voted to cut sickle cell Anemia as a fundraising target. Man the outrage would be humongous.

CUSA has always been run by politically correct nutjobs. Most of the school is indifferent about student politics so the loons get to take over since the normal people don't care.

No of course not. My Ancestors 400 years ago enslaved blacks killed natives, and expropriated territory that didn't belong to them. Clearly I by extention MUST be evil and therefore any disease that strikes me down must be a JUST disease.

You know if you want to feel great about where you might stand 30-40 years from now in this country look no further than the 'official' opinions, policies, and unofficial behavior of Student groups at some of our Universities like McGill, U of T, York, Concordia, Carleton, U of O, etc.

On the face of this article it sounds bad, really bad. But Charles Adler had the president of the students union on yesterday to explain this BS. She mad a lot of sense. SHe explained that the original motion before the student union was to debate if they should do fundraising for different charities for each year instead of just CF. Which is fine. The reason that this looks so bad is because it was ONE student that spoke out in the debate about supporting CF because of the reasons listed above. (Which are complete BS). Those where the remarks that basically stuck with the story. She explained that the motion had nothing to do with the above allegations and it was only the remarks of 1 member. The union strictly voted on the motion if they should switch up fundraising each year.

Sounds like it was just one idiot school union member that made these remarks.

Wow that sounds ######ed. I thought Carlton students were supposed to be smart. I wrote a report on Cystic Fibrosis in like Grade 7 and I knew more than this council seemed to know...copping out that "the information provided them was factually incorrect" is ridiculous.

But part of that is probably the journalism of the piece which is blowing it out of proportion. It is probably a more prudent move to diversify their fund raising and help out other charities.

To be totally honest though, my general experience with SU people in universities across this country is that they are generally talentless loonies. So this isn't much of a surprise.

The problem with student politics is that you often get "radicals" involved who dont represent the majority of the student population. Voter apathy is huge at most universities as most students have many other priorities. Therefore you get a small number of people who run for student office and a small number of students who vote. This results in radicals, specials interest groups, etc in being able to gain control of the student government and being able to push through their own agendas.
It gets even worse at schools that known as being havens for these types of nutjobs.

This was my immediate thought as well. I'm not sure why a segment of the population should be neglected charity because of their biology. I would have loved to be in on the meeting that produced this ridiculous conclusion.

Actually, this is turning into enormous publicity for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation -- thanks to those morons. They'll probably have a spike in donations now.

As someone who himself suffers from a disease that predominantly targets a similar demographic, I'd love to be a victim of this sort of political correctness.

Honestly though, there's so many charities out there these days, and large organizations (student associations are relatively well-heeled) are inundated with requests. Not every charity can be accommodated, unfortunately. Usually, it boils down to directing money towards things that benefit the most people. That's just the way it works, sadly.

The big flaw the Carleton students made was their lamebrain "excuse" caused a big kerfuffle. If they had just said "sorry, it doesn't effect enough people" they might have gotten away with it.

Then they either get Cystic or Fibrosis depending upon which parent is white.

Do the math on donating to a charity... it's one of the biggest wastes of money in our society.

The worst culprits are the bazzilion breast cancer organizations. That Weekend to End Breast Cancer is the biggest scam I've ever seen. It's not even a charity, and thus no bound by the 80-20 rule. It's really only popular because boobies are very important to everyone. It's not like we see the same amount of coverage or funds for prostate cancer....

I'd much rather donate directly to a research program at a University then have a bunch of middle-men take a large chunk.

Definitely not the case with the vast majority of charities. You have to be wary as to who you give your money to like with anything else.

80% of every dollar that goes to CF is used in research/education/treatment.

EVERY dollar from shinerama goes to CF Canada.

i have NO problem with that at all. It is a fantastic orginization.

I participated in Shineorama in my first and second years at Carleton. It was a fun and worthy event, it's really unfortunate this crud is smearing it. I wonder if people will read this article and come to the conclusion that they don't want to donate when the students come around.

And hopefully, people don't try and paint all Carleton students as "PC nutjobs" or stupid as a result of this stuff.

I feel the same way on this. I do not under stand why breast cancer is so much more popular then other cancers. Then everywhere you look some company is putting out a pink something or other to support it.

Now don't get me wrong, I know cancer is horrable and should be beaten down, but I give my money to the Canadian Cancer Foundation because they support finghing cancer in general, not just one specific type.
