Depends on what we are calling reality, because the reality is (pun intended) some of the best show are reality based:
Axemen
Deadliest Catch
Survivorman
Man v. Wild
Dirty Jobs
Long Way Round/Down
Canada's Worst Driver
Survivor
Amazing Race

Reality is like any genre. There's great shows, good shows, mediocre ones and god-awful ones.

Man v Wild.....i can't stand this guy. Compare him to Survivorman...and it is game over. That dude carries all his own gear, films himself, and goes to crazy places as well.

Nah, Bear just does not cut it.

Not being sexist, but 95% of "reality TV" is aimed at a female audience, certainly everything thats on MTV, the dancing shows, the idol shows. The female demographic rules. Mind you, the male oriented reality shows, like "American Chopper" are garbage as well. These shows are cheap to make, and women love them, so there is no hope....

How about the guy that eats all the weird food. Cant remember the name of that...Not Bourdain, the guy who eats uh whatever. I do get a kick out of Cash Cab. Do you have that in canada/ I'm thinking of going to NYC to mug one of the winners cos I'd probably never get past 3 questions.

we have it but the awards are all either Canadian Tire Money, or GC's to Tim Horton's or The Bay.

Oh I love Canada's Worst Driver! It is crazy to see how bad these people are. Another good one is Canada's Worst Handyman.

Yeah I do agree. The fact that Les Stroud films all his own stuff is amazing. However, if you don't compare the two shows head to head, Man v. Wild is still a pretty good show on its own merit. I like the fact that Bear will intentionally put himself into dangerous scenarios (such as leaping into a thing of quicksand)...which he can do because he's got people around him to intervene if necessary.

Both shows are good.

I agree his stupidity factor is higher.....jumping in the bog. Drinking his own piss. It is interesting both shows discussed the consumption of the worst amber nector.......with two very different takes. Long stoy short, Les did not drink his piss, he used it to gather water.

These are off the top of my head. They have done nothing other than being born into money. I hate the way these entertainmnet "news" shows treat these people like they are important or matter.
Naw there have always been people like this. Zsa Zsa Gabor did nothing. Her sister was in Green Acres, but Zsa Zsa lived off her name. Jaye P Morgan from The Gong Show had been a singer in the 50s but hadn't done anything for a decade.

I think the term is "famous for being famous". And I agree that it is much more prevalent now, but there has always been a few people who fit the category.

I think it is worse now because of all the media that are looking for content. 30 years ago you would get 3 or 4 channels, or even if you had cable it was 20 or 30. In '92 Springsteen wrote the song "57 Channels (and Nothin' on)", but today on Satellite I get hundreds of channels. And they all need to fill the airtime with something.

Yeah very true - that's actually one of the reasons why I like watching both. There's been a view occasions where they have much different opinions on stuff like drinking one's own piss.

Ray Mears Bushcraft is another good one...much different in that he's not out there on his own. But some of the skills he demonstrates are pretty amazing.

point taken, but I think it is much worse now then ever before, while I am sure you could pull some other examples, I could find many, many, more.

As you know we are in an age of instant star manufacturing.

I would suggest to you that it is worse today than ever before.

OK, you had me until there.

I'm not a big fan of backstabbing (survivor) and watching private conversations that should be private (the other).
