Meteor?
Anyone one see anything in Calgary today?
The sky in northern Alberta was lit up HUGE at about 5:30 this afternoon. I guess people saw whatever it was all from as far away as Regina.
People around Cold Lake are reporting pieces landing nearby. It's still pretty early but does anyone know anything about this?

I am in Bonnyville and this thing lit up the sky like it was daytime for about 5 seconds. It was crazy.

Whoa really? I'll have to look around but that doesn't sound like your run of the mill meteor. Wasn't some piece of space junk expected to come to earth this week? I think it was posted here.

Reading the various accounts it seems this thing was visible from Red Deer to Fort Mac, and East to the Saskatchewan border. So it must have been big, and must have at least started off at a pretty decent altitude.
If only it had aimed a little lower. Then we wouldn't have to play the Oilers anymore.
Edit: Having read a bit more about it, apparently it was also visible in Manitoba. Which suggests that it was both enormous and at a very high altitude, that it didn't fizzle out but actually kept going a long way, or there was more than one of it.

I saw it and it was amazing! It was probably 5:25pm... looking east, I see the night sky light up for about 3 seconds and a big fireball fall out of the sky. I turned on the radio right away.. and a few minutes later.. there were other reports from callers witnessing the same thing. Probably something I'll never see again.. but it was awesome.

It was not something distant in the sky. It literally turned night into day.
Freaking weird.

If it was seen from Ft,Mac to Airdrie at the same time you can bet your life it was "distant"
In a way this is very scary, If it was seen by people that far apart and was that bright it would mean it was very big, more like an asteriod than a little meteor.
So much for early warnings of catastrophic events

Well it didn't turn 'night into day'.. only the sky around the fireball was very bright.. and it only lasted for 3 seconds.

This was on CFCN news. It was seen in Lethbridge as well.
Must have been cool to see.

I witnessed something like this a few years ago in a remote area of Manitoba and it freaked the hell out of me too.

I saw a real big one over a year ago, but it doesn't sound like it was quite this big.
Huge green flash, with sound and explosion into two separate trails, but nothing that lit up the sky like daytime.
Wish I had seen this one.
