Queen's Cancels Homecoming
http://www.globecampus.ca/in-the-new...-over-rowdies/
Queen's University is cancelling its annual fall homecoming event for two years in an effort to put an end to the rowdy street party that has grown up around the weekend.
Efforts over the past three years by the university, police and local citizens to make the outdoor booze-up less appealing have had little effect. After this year's gathering, the university announced that it would be examining how best to stop the unsanctioned event on Aberdeen Street out of concern for the safety of the 9,000 or some revellers who pack the area. There was also concern about the damage it was doing to the university's reputation.
A local emergency room doctor warned this fall that ”loss of life is inevitable,” unless the tradition was stopped.

Twice in the last five years, London police in riot gear have descended on Fleming Drive to quell unruly student parties.

One thing I always enjoyed about going to Western, living in London during the summer once all the students left the bars were practically empty. First weekend back is always dreadful after a summer of no line-ups

It seems that as soon as outside parties start getting involved ("Officials expressed concern that the character of the crowd had changed to include more high school students, older men and fewer people associated with the university.") then it stops becoming an event the university can get any semblance of control over.
My 2nd last year at Mac, there were some traditional on campus parties where a bunch of "townies" decided to crash. Some fights erupted that required Hamilton-Wentworth Police to get control over, and that was that last of those parties. Which was too bad - those were some of the best parties ever.

TJ Baxters patio in the summertime was always great. Ceeps, Jim Bobs, GTs and Joe Cools was always bad when the students came back.

A lot of weekends during the school year were dead too - most of the kids went home to Toronto for the weekend, so Thurdsay was always the big night. Had to get to The Ceeps by 4:00 pm. Many weekends, there were only a few of us around - prairie kids like me, kids from Northern Ontario. We all had nick-names - Ringo, Tongue, Huggy, Thumper, Bob Probert's cousin, Paul Masson. My name was Lucky, ironically.

$2 beers all the time.
Homecoming - usually everyone stayed in London for that. There were always 3-4 ambulances waiting outside the student section to deal with alcohol poisonings.
Went to one Vanier Cup in the old Varsity Stadium in Toronto (Western vs. UBC). My friend at U of T was an engineer and a member of The Lady Godiva Marching Band. Basically they used their instruments to smuggle booze into the stadium.
I miss school.

I was witness to an Arts County Fair at UBC one year. Insanity. If those people were on CP the confessions thread would continue for years. Can't say I totally disagree with hammer dropping like this.

For homecoming we would get a barrel, rinse it out really well, and make a barrel full of purple jesus (alcool and grape Koolaid). We would be blitzed and then go to the football game.
One year the homecoming game was being televised (on CHCH, channel 11, Hamilton) and the TV guys wanted a bunch of cheering fans in the stands right behind the reporter (Dick Smythe). No problem. Except that as soon as the sideline update began, one guy started chanting "Dick beats his wife! Dick beats his wife!" and everyone joined in. Poor Dick finished his segment then stomped away.

We brought some evil alcool back to Calgary for our old friends to try. They were shooting it, while we were shooting water. It really burns.

To this day, you won't get Jean Dunlop to tattle on the boys she supervised years ago in residence at the University of Western Ontario.
Not a word about the Purple Jesus brew of alcool and Kool-Aid that Barry Katzman used to concoct in garbage pails back in the 1980s — stirred, not shaken, with a hockey stick.
He claims it was career training — he's now a winemaker.

To be really nasty, we would goad people into taking a scoop of the koolaid crystal directly into their mouth then use a shot of alcool to wash it down.
And I can't believe that article revealed the secret mixing instructions!

Another UWO grad here! I do miss going to Homecoming every fall. Great to see the Mustangs back in the Vanier Cup on Saturday. I remember being at SkyDome in '94 for their last victory and in '95 when U of Calgary smoked them. Hammered both times.

Was that the guy with the hat? Dick Beddoes?
Beats his wife?
All this reminds me of the time Queen's students went up to McGill, and violated mannequins on the field after the game.

Well, I'm not a UWO grad, but a London native. I'm a MAC grad.
But we would do kegs for parties and some sort of a puch for the ladies who didn't like beer. One of the funniest times was we didn't have enough alcohol for the punch, so there was only like 10% of whet there should have been. Seeing women come staggering up, slurring their words and asking for more while saying " This is great, I can't even taste the alcohol" was pretty funny.
