Same Sex Marriage
I'm rather surprised at the lack of opinions on several American states continuing to prohibit gay marriage.

Along with California, among other states, who actually switched the law back to again prohibit gay marriage.

Here we go again
Surprised about California, especially when I thought popular support was for it (will, at least that's what the celebrities out there were all lobbying for it)

Probably cause this gets debated here about 3 times a year.
We live in Canada where we have more freedoms. If the Americans need to write their laws based on the silly interpretations of a cryptic book then so be it.
History is showing that there's more tolerance and acceptance in the younger generations anyway. Like women's sufferage, and black civil rights it's just a matter of time.

Blacks and Latinos voted in overwhelming numbers against it. Those two groups, especially the Latinos are quite conservative in their social values. IMO it was not a surprise that prop 8 passed. It's different when you are in a booth by yourself and the vote is anonymous then talking openly about it in the public.

Sort of.
Referendum said "No."
A judge overruled the referendum, which he did not have the authority to do.
They figured that meant they could re-word the referundum so it would sound like the rights were being stripped, instead of established, because it would make the measure more likely to pass.

I find that interesting, especially from the black community. For a group that has suffered so much discrimination because of the color of their skin, you would think that they would be more accepting.

I believe the latest flareup was in the presidential thread where Tranny99 and MarchHare got into it for a bit.
If this debate goes anything like the previous debates, there will be a lot of name calling both ways nobody convinces anyone else of anything.
I can't recall how many posts we got before the "Nazi" card was played last time.

This year, I canvassed the streets of South Los Angeles and Compton, knocking on doors, talking politics to passers-by and working as I never had before to ensure a large voter turnout among African Americans. But even I wasn't inspired to encourage black people to vote against the proposition.

See, that's what I would think as well, but I was in California for work in mid October and the radio was discussing some local highschools getting their students to participate in a mock vote since they weren't old enough yet to vote in the upcoming election, and Proposition 8 was among many things the students voted on and the vote was overwhelmingly in favour (something like 80%+) of reversing the right and banning gay marriages... pretty surprising.

Hmmm, well I don't know about pre-voting-age thoughts. But I did hear that the majority of the votes for prop 8 (the prop was to ban right? Not to uphold the ruling?) were from older voters. Even more so than this whole, 'black voters against it' news story that has come out.
Even without hearing that I still gotta believe it's one of those things that will come in time.

Sad irony behind U.S. voters who opposed gay marriage
Timothy Giannuzzi, Calgary Herald
Published: Thursday, November 13, 2008
http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...0-c7484212ef48
One of the most unexpected outcomes of Proposition 8 was the way in which visible minorities voted. An estimated 70 per cent of blacks and 53 per cent of Latinos voted in favour of the measure. While the Latino vote was a little less surprising, given the strength of Catholic sentiment among them, the depth of black support for Proposition 8 was a surprise. It led to the bizarre and insalubrious spectacle of a long-embattled minority shattering convention to put one of their own in the highest office in the land while voting overwhelmingly to deny a basic civil right to another embattled minority.
Even sadder was the way in which supporters of Proposition 8 spoke of same-sex marriage, so disturbingly reminiscent of the beliefs of segregationists half a century ago during the civil rights struggle that you have to wonder why more blacks were not turned off.

Because I couldnt give a rats a$$ about any US state I will give my opinon on what Alberta should do close this issue once and for all.
Stop issuing marriage licenses, instead issue civil union licenses - dont force anyone to grant such licenses if they dont want to.
Once the government started giving tax breaks to couples, they allowed this issue to take over. No matter what I think of a same sex union, they have every right to the same partner tax benefit as a man/woman union.
That would solve it for the most parties, same sex couples get the tax breaks, crazy baptits cant say the goverment is issuing marriage licenses. Also, can anyone else not see the complete hypocracy in people seeing a governmental licenses as some form of religious badge of honour - just change the name of the license, that would solve the case for all.

Not a chance. "Marriage" is an important word to many people for many reasons.

Nope.
The pro same sex marriage crowd would respond with something along the lines of " Holding the word and the feeling of the word 'marriage' away from gay people is treating them differently and encouraging others to treat them and look upon them as second class citizens."
