Default Frustrated Wireless network user

Home network, has been working for months.

Router and host are fine. I can connect to the net (obviously).

Suddenly and mysteriously, my clients (1 PC, 1 X-Box) can't get past the DNS resolution step.

Any clues?

Is the DNS in your router set to a specific one or is it Auto/Dynamic?

Is it only wireless clients that are affected?

Dynamic I think.

No, the X-box is wired.

I would start with a powercycle of the equipment. It's usually the first step in troubleshooting, the easiest, and the most common fix.

-Unplug the power cable from both your modem and router. It's also good to turn off the clients.
-Plug the modem back in and wait to make sure it get's a full connection.
-Plug the router back in and wait for it to get the ISP settings
-If you turned off the clients, start them back up again.

Hopefully that works?

If you connect directly to the modem, bypassing the router, does it work?

Copy down the DNS servers that your router is getting, then within windows, go to Run > type in CMD, then enter. Then type "ping <DNS IP ADDRESS>" (without the <>).

It should send some packets... if none of them get through, then it MAY be a problem with the DNS servers. We'll see what that says first.

Also, to confirm it's a DNS issue you shouldn't be able to get to yahoo.com via the URL. If you type in the IP address in the browsers address bar (68.180.206.184 or 206.190.60.37) it should come up with a yahoo page.

Thanks for the help. My daughter's asleep now, so I'm going to try this tomorrow after work. If I disconnect the router the wireless PC will definitely not be able to connect though...come to think of it, the X-Box is plugged into the router itself anyway, so it wouldn't connect either.
