But of course, if you really like the Talking Heads, it's all good

Can you explain to me how it is possible that I don't own this album Hanna?

Great pick. Outstanding.

Quick question: If I wanted to pick a certain album released in 1985, then re released in 2004 with 6 new songs...what category is available? Both or just one?

I have a similair record in mind, but I think the logical thing is to put it in 1985. The "new" songs were likely b-sides etc recorded around the time of the original record. Many classic records get re-released, but I think we should go with the original release date to put in it's proper context.

I am very pleased to make this selection. I am sorry to WindomUrl if you were going to pick this one, but as we discussed at the pub last week, it is one of my favorite records. I bought it mid 80's and have listened to it for over two decades. It never gets old.

When I first bought it, I read the album notes and there was very little information on the band. It was recorded in London England, so I assumed they were British. Imagine my suprise so many years later to learn that not only were the two leaders of the band Canadian, but they were from Calgary! Windom even went to school with them, again sorry.

They are guitarist Mark Bandola and bassist Rob Vandeven. And they are, of course, The Lucy Show!
I will put them, for now, in the 1985 category; until such time as I am told to move them.(I just got told to move them...edit!)

The album is Mania.

1. The Land And The Life (Vandeven/The Lucy Show)
2. View From The Outside (Bandola/ The Lucy Show)
3. Sojourn's End (Vandeven/ TLS)
4. Sad September (Vandeven/ TLS)
5. A Million Things (Bandola/TLS)
6. Sun And Moon (Vandeven/TLS)
7. Shame (Bandola/TLS)
8. Melody (Vandeven/ TLS)
9. Part Of Me Now (Bandola/TLS)
10. New Message (Bandola/TLS)

extra/new
11. Jam In E (TLS)
12. Invitation (Bandola/TLS)
13. Civil Servant (Bandola/TLS)
14. Sun And Moon (Live)
15. View From The Outside (Live)
16. New Message (Basement Demo)
17. A Million Things (Original Mix)

Band
Mark Bandola: Vocals, Guitars, keyboards
Rob Vandeven: Vocals, Bass
Peter Barraclough: vocals, guitars
Brian Hudspeth: vocals, drums

Some reviews of the band:
http://www.thelucyshow.net/press.asp

"'Undone' (the first record) had seen the foursome make significant inroads with a moody, subconcious, contemplative yet beautiful LP that seemd an heir to Joy Division, The Cure, and The Comsat Angels. Whereas 'Mania' took those elemants and added a big slice of boisterous 60s pop, minor-psychedelia, and power-pop to form the brighter, snappier, more exuberant record you hold."
Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover

More from the above..."...sparkiling optimism of Bandola's Beatlesesque, melodic A Million Things and New Message. Yet it also takes in Vandeven's wistful nostalgia on Land and the Life (about Calgary!!), his John Ford-cinematic Sojourn's End (the psychedelic guitars near the end are fantastic), and his thin line between love and hate on Sun and Moon. Meanwhile, Bandola morphs from cheerfulness to Shame's revulsion over global indifference to apartheid."

Here you can listen to a couple songs:
http://www.words-on-music.com/lucyshow.html

There was a video for A million Things that got MTV airplay. It is on YouTube.
Too bad I could not find Land and The Life, View From the Outside, Sojourns's End, or Shame on the internet.

I cannot reccomend enough. Will loan 1985 record or new release CD to any that want to hear and can't find it.

Interesting band Aeneas. Sounds very 1966ish to me. I would love to hear more than the two songs. I will see if I can pick up a copy here locally. Really loving this thread!

Kids at grandparents, The Lucy Show blaring out the speakers as I type.
Hope the neighbors like it.
You won't regret it. Easier to find now with the re release. If you find "Undone" now you really have a rare one.

WindomURL let me borrow his copy of Nuggets. Thanks! The Thirteenth Floor Elevators I recognize form the High Fidelity soundtrack. I'm cleaning the aquarium and listening to it right now. It sounded really wild at first, until I switched the turntable from 45 to 33.

"their music has a very naval quality..."
Thanks troutman. Too bad "A Million Things" was the first 'single', there are 7 better songs on that album, in my opinion.

BWAHAHA!

You guys who talked about being sore from playing ball hockey are wussies.
Try carrying your Nuggets around all day in a plastic bag!

Awesome pick, Aeneas. I was amazed that you knew of them. Most people were unaware of the band, except if you went to Lord Beaverbrook. I was actually clued into the band and their LP through another ex-classmate Marc Hutchinson. His name appears in the liner notes, IIRC. Even though we only talked about it a week ago, I didn't expect you to pick it in this draft, let alone in the FIRST ROUND!

Here is their Myspace page with 4 songs to hear.

Since I only have the original release on vinyl, I'll have to hit you up for the re-release on CD. Thanks!

For the first round selection, The Slippery Grooves picks yet another country-punk flavoured band and their 1997 album,
Southern Culture on the Skids - "Plastic Seat Sweat"
(EDIT: Please place in the Album 1997-1999 category.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Souther...e_on_the_Skids
Free Live music collection: http://www.archive.org/details/South...tureOnTheSkids

SCOTS @allmusic: http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg...1:vaivad8kv8w5
True to their name, North Carolina's Southern Culture on the Skids offers an affectionate parody of local white-trash trailer-park culture, matching their skewed outlook with a wild, careening brand of rock & roll. SCOTS' music is a quintessentially Southern-fried amalgam of rockabilly, boogie, country, blues, swamp pop, and chitlin circuit R&B, plus a liberal dose of California surf guitar, a hint of punk attitude, and the occasional mariachi horns. Following an early incarnation as a relatively straightforward roots rock outfit, they morphed into a raucous, sleazy, tongue-in-cheek party band obsessed with sex and food; in fact, fried chicken became a crucial part of their live performances, whether it was used in eating contests or tossed into the audience.

Song Title Time (with Amazon.com samples)
1. Shotgun 3:19
2. Earthmover 3:04
3. Dance For Me 2:27
4. Banana Puddin' 4:48
5. 40 Miles To Vegas 4:03
6. Love-A-Rama 2:07
7. Deja Varoom 2:26
8. Country Funk 3:21
9. Strangest Ways 3:58
10. Theme From "The Cheaters" 3:05
11. House Of Bamboo 3:03
12. Carve That Possum17:18

I'd never heard of this band until they performed on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in '97 for this album. But wow, what a treat. Fine musicianship, a rocking fun spirit, and a stage act that could be described as a cross between the B-52s and Cheap Trick. I wish I could upload a video of this performance now, but maybe someday when I get the hardware setup to do so. In the meantime, here are a couple of live performances from Youtube.

Banana Puddin' Charlotte, North Carolina June 29, 2007

Banana Puddin' live from 7/4/2008
