Default NHL 09 - PS2 (The poor man's NHL)

Ok, it's nearly impossible to get any info on the PS2 version of NHL 09 so I had to start this thread. I wish I could afford the PS3, but with a new baby and the markets going to , that's not really an option right now so I'm stuck with crappy ol' PS2.

Anyways, from everything that's been described about the PS3 Be a Pro mode, I'm quite disapointed with the PS2 version.

First, you don't start in the AHL, but in fact are placed on the 1st line of the NHL team of your choice which drastically brings down your team's OV rating.

Second, you can't be a goalie (which is not a big issue to me).

Third, and what I have a question about, is I can't find where to see the trades that have been made. Does anyone know if they are announced anywhere? I wasn't sure if the computer even makes trades but last game against Nashville, they had Havlat so they must be trading. I'd like to be able to see what's going on elsewhere in the league but there is so little info.

Fourth, I have to do the lines myself, I thought as a "player" the coach would take care of that but they don't seem to do anything.

Lastly, the computer players are just stupid in the game. Langkow shoots more often than passes and he'll shoot from just about anywhere. Iginla passes it to my crappy player everytime he touches the puck even if I'm covered by 3 guys. Phaneuf, no matter how much I try to set him up, will not take a shot. He always passes it off.

MAN, do I want a PS3!!! You PS3 guys/gals are so lucky!

The CP Fatas are a ps3 exclusive though ... that trumps custom soundtracks any day.

I see that you can get an "arcade" 360 at BestBuy for $200 now.

Not bad when the PS3 is $400.

For what it's worth I have both systems and NHL09 on both, the game just seems to look better on the 360 and the 360 controller is way more comfortable.

yeah, but the arcade also doesn't have a hard drive. paying for one of those will push your price way up. as will paying fees for xbox live.

and the controller is entirely a personal preference. one is not better than the other or more comfortable. and i would actually assume with the OP using ps2, a move to ps3 would be easier.

but this is definitely not a debate about which platform is better...

OP - i feel your pain. i played nhl08 on ps2. i actually d/l'ed it for PC and played it that way after a few months. its such an inferior version.

hearing that nhl09 was going to be crappy for PC again, i started looking into a ps3. its been the best decision i have ever made. the game is like night and day. for all its problems, ps3 and 360 owners do need to remember how lucky they are.

you stated that buying a new console is not an option, but honestly i would try as hard as you can to get one. and certainly quit buying these crap versions of nhl. that can help you save!

While I certainly don't want to derail this thread into a system war, nobody should ever consider touching the "arcade 360". The fact that it's even available bothers me as many consumers are going to buy it and take it home only to realize they need to pay $100 for a hard drive. That's not cool.

The decision should be between the $300 pro and the $400 ps3.

Now for the on topic stuff: My buddy bought the previous 3 versions of hockey and it enraged him every year. From 06 on, the games were pretty much identical. they'd throw in a new feature to cover up the fact that the code was relatively identical. it's a shame that the massive number of people with ps2's have been left out in the cold the way they have.

Its really remarkable to me that these games keep coming out for ps2. I guess the customer base is there.

I thought I read somewhere that all the 3rd jerseys are out in the PS2 verison, as there is no provision to update it at the end of the November.

Likely false, sounds far too easy.

I actually tried XBox360 for the first time yesterday cuz my buddy just bought one. I've been a Sega/Sony supporter for many years now but I gotta say, that controller does feel comfortable.

Now, I know this may get me in trouble but please keep in mind I live in China and to get games that a normal Canadian would like (NHL, Madden, etc.) is extremely difficult here, so one of the big reasons why I can't justify getting a PS3 is because there is no mod chip available and thus, my selection of games here would SUCK. IF I were to splurge on a 360, I would be going against everything that is good within me but would be able to buy copied games here (the selection of burnt games far outnumbers that of the real ones). From what I understand though, you can't play online with copied games, so I would still have to find the real deal to truly enjoy the whole experience.

So basically my biggest problem is if I can't find a real copy of NHL here, the point of buying a PS3 or 360 is greatly diminished.

Dobbles - Thanks for the emotional support, but I haven't wasted more than a dollar on NHL09 for PS2 because as I said, no way I could find the real game here. Had to download it and burn it on DVD cuz even a copied version of NHL is near impossible to find in "stores". I guess I'll have to find another way to save my pennies.

Edit: I should add though that growing up and until about a year after I lived in China, I never bought or used a copied game and do not promote that way of getting your games. If you can buy the real one, do it. I would.

Is there a menu screen waiting for a code input?

Good news sir, the PS3 isn't region locked! Now you don't have to worry about going against "everything that is good within me."

Whenever you get one, import away!
