Calgary city council probably needed more money for their recycling program.

Me too. Makes me glad I didn't take them in a couple of weeks ago.

Yikes- they are already advertizing that milk containers will have a deposit associated with them come June 2009. I'd sure hate to be working at a recycling place when the guy who has been hoarding milk containers for 8 months cashes in.
I also wonder what they will pay when people bring in cans and bottles on November 2nd. Because how will they know when you paid the deposit? Or would they just take the hit?

Now the bottle depots won't just smell like stale beer, they will get the sour milk aroma.

I'm glad there's going to be a deposit on milk jugs. Now maybe my sad sack neighbours will start recycling them. The only way to get some people to recycle stuff is to charge a deposit.

The thought of that makes me wanna throw up. This is why I rinse out every container before putting it into a bag...I learned that lesson the first time I took back bottles that were sitting outside over the summer

I bought an open box truck a couple months ago and have been saving my cans ever since (instead of leaving them by the dumpster for bums). I was going to bring them in last weekend but it looks like my laziness has paid off! Cha ching!!

I recently got a truck too...and then calculated in the four years since I have had regular transport I've probably put a few hundred dollars right into the homeless community!
Maybe I should go on scavenging missions up and down alleys to pay for gas?

Plastics recycled in Calgary are shipped to Hong Kong. (Where they are likely forwarded to China and turned into baby food.) Sending that stuff halfway around the world doesn't sound particularly environmentally friendly to me from a greenhouse gas perspective.

I've always sort of considered it my way of giving to charity. The way I figure, people that collect bottles are at least doing something. Not like the losers that stand on the corner with a sign and start walking through traffic, panhandling.
I always (used) to let a garbage bag of cans accumulate on the balcony and when it's full, just put it beside the dumpster. Like I said, at least these people are "working". I respect that.

So, has anybody returned a bunch of cans/bottles since this increase went into effect? I know on the FAQ section it says the refund go up right away- just wondering if anybody had a depot try to tell them that they only get the old rate.

Pffft whatever man. The guys running the bottle depots will adjust their rip off scales accordingly, so no matter how many bottles you bring in you're still only getting $48.
"Lemme see here.....you brought in 1,564 beer cans, 2,489 bottles and 456 wine bottles......yup, $48.00"

I have yet to find a bottle depot in this city that wouldn't steal the allowance from a blind 4 year old girl.
What's up with the car wash/bottle depot combos now too? I see those popping up here and there....take your bottle back, get a bunch of loonies, and wash your car?

What is the most you have gotten from a trip to the Bottle Depot? When I was living with 4 other dudes in Uni we would regularly get 180 bucks...
