A tip for wearing one: the best way to attach it is to put the pin through the poppy itself after putting it through your shirt the second time. It is hard to explain, but doing this makes it pretty much impossible to fall off.
People think I'm anti-war and anti-military. I'm really just anti-stupid war and anti-frivolous military. I'm intensely proud and am extremely thankful of those who sacrificed their lives for us.

I don't appreciate that, for what it's worth.
Terrible contribution to the thread. You know what, I don't even think it constitutes a contribution. Go troll somewhere else.
For those complaining about poppies falling off, read my tip. It's easy to do and super-handy.

So those who sacrificed their lives in Afghanistan made less of a sacrifice than those who lost their lives at the Somme or at Dieppe or during the Holland liberation or during the Korean War?
A life lost under the flag of ones nation is a life which is worth honoring. It doesn't matter which campaign or in which offensive, it is a life of one of our nations heroes and should be respected as such.
EDIT: You turned it into a thread with political overtones when you posted that you were not thankful for the sacrifices of the 97 Canadian soldiers who never came back from Afghanistan to see their loved ones.

Thank you Sir. Soldiers do not set policy.
Got a poppy today even though I have 3 kicking around the house. I gave more than I usually do, but still felt guilty about not giving more. Can I drop a 20 in the bucket, or would there be a better way to give the vets a larger donation? Can I donate to my communities legion?

It was flying under the radar (like I expected it would) until some guy who's been here for two months rips on me. When I say I don't want to talk about it in this thread, I don't want to talk about it. Everybody knows my position on Afghanistan and those who have died. We really don't need to beat that dead horse.
This thread is for encouraging the wearing of poppies, so....WEAR YOUR POPPIES!
If you feel like calling me a dbag feel free to pm me, but keep this thread clean (and yes I realize I'm the one who "dirtied" it in the first place).

Back when I was in grade four, my teacher told us two ways to keep our poppies from falling off, the "push the pin back through the poppy" way someone already mentioned, and the Canadian flag pin way as well. I recall her saying that both were acceptable, I mean this was a long time ago, but I can't see how associating the Canadian flag with the poppy would be a bad thing?

The timeline to voice an opinion is two weeks. The timeline to voice an opinion to evman is after you get your physics degree.

1. It doesn't matter who mentioned it, it was an insensitive and moronic remark which should be condemned by all members of this board who possess rational thought. You should go and talk to people who have been overseas in Afghanistan and talk to them about what they have accomplished and the people they have helped in the process. It might mean more to me for a number of reasons, but your comments about not having any thanks or supposed respect for soldiers who fought overseas make me have significantly less respect for you as a person.
2. You can't introduce politics into a thread and then tell everyone you don't want it to be discussed.... that is what a message board is all about, the free flow of ideas and opinions.

Well since this is suppose to be a positive thread and support for all troops, whether you agree with the war they fought or are currently fighting.
So evman150 why don't you edit your post on the subject you don't even feeling like talking about it anyways. Then we can drop it and move on and continue talking about what the thread was started for.

I bought one today. I was ashamed that all I had was about 78 cents in my pocket at the time.
The gentleman selling them said it doesn't matter at all. As I turned to walk away I noticed at least a half dozen medals on his chest.
I think I'll go back tomorrow with a $20 and ask him about his contribution to me living a relatively lazy care free existense.
Hope he'll be there

Ditto.
I always make a point of having my (now) 7 y/o son go up to a veteran and personally thank him for the freedom he enjoys before donating. He's starting to understand the situation (other than being shy). I'm working on the 2 y/o also.

Thought that I would bump this thread to inform everyone of the services which are being made available in Calgary on Remembrance Day.
- The Military Museums (Museum of the Regiments), 4520 Crowchild Trail SW, 10:45 - 11:00.
- The Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium also puts on a service every year, in the past the doors have opened around 8:30 with the service starting around 10:30.
That being said even if you don't go to a service, please take a 2 minutes out of your day to reflect upon what has been sacrificed for our freedoms.

There might be, I know that the park has been undergoing some pretty extensive renovations over the past year so I don't know if there will be a service there or not so I decided to err on the side of caution and not put it down.
