MSNBC link

Hopefully this rumor is true - I can't wait to hear Shaq start crying

what a great ambasador to Canada Nash is. Guy handles himself with pure class on and off the floor and is a total team player. Also loved it how he got Cuban to fly him down for Salt Lake so he could watch the gold medal game!!!

As for the can't wait to hear Shaq cry, I doubt it, I gotta say I got a ton of respect for the big guy. In LA he would always take all the players wifes out for a shopping spree after a long road trip and not to mention he was always the guy to hold partys at his house (nobody needs to bring up Kobe and his partys) This year for christmas he bought out an entire toys r us for local kids in need. The guy always is a great guy with the media and his teamates seem to love him.

Nash says he'd have voted for Shaq.

Well both certainly were big impact guys this year. Nash runs a great offensive game and really makes use of the guys around him. His main objective in the game is for his team to win and not for himself to look good unlike a lot of the higher profile point guards. Although Nash may not be the most talented guy in the league he is value to his team. Shaq also is a guy who deserves credit for being a winner everywhere he's been. Sure he likes to have the ball, but his presence creates a lot of space for his team mates to operate. Teams are always keying on him, and trying to shut him down, and have done so with little success. When you consider how advanced coaching and the like is these days you really have to consider Shaq as one of the NBA's alltime great physical presences as he manages to outperform his peers at the center position every year.

Wow, Steve Nash and Shaq are just two class acts. When Shaq was asked about what he thought of Steve winning he pretended to cry which brought a bunch of laughs from the reporters and then went off on how great of a guy Steve is. Shaq congratulated him on the twins Steve and his wife had much earlier this year, and also said congratulations to Canada.

Nash saying he would've voted for Shaq along with the way he carried himself the entire year just shows how great of a guy he really is. He's the poster boy for Canadian basketball everywhere!!

That was pretty funny when Shaq did that. He also said that the Championship is more improtant than the MVP award. Very classy the way he congratualted Steve Nash though. Wonder if Kobe would have been that humble?

It's been a long time since a point guard was recognized as MVP. The last one was Magic Johnson I'm sure. Pretty big honor for Nash.

And, yeah, Shaquille O'Neal is one of the few NBA stars that I genuninely like and admire. Not sure what the guy at the top of the thread was talking about.

Kobe would have taken the award, thanked himself for winning it, and then go back to Denver to rape another girl since his Lakers still wouldn't make the playoffs.

As much as I hate Kobe, I think thats just a tad harsh. Only a tad though.

Yeah, I saw that as well. Really cool of Shaq to say.

Very little to choose between the two this year. I could totally understand seeing Shaq win it as well, he's had another great year.

That being said, what a great achievement for Nash, and a real boost for Canadian b-ball.

From Victoria, B.C., to Santa Clara to NBA MVP. Unreal.

I heard he's only the 3rd point guard to win the honor. Pretty high class.

He went to my old high school's biggest rival, St.Michael's University School.

Bas**rd.

Nah...it's great to see a local boy doing so well. Whether he went to SMUS or not.

There's a large number of Laker fans (myself included) that are upset that Shaq refused to get into shape the last 3 years in LA, his refusal to have foot surgery until the beginning of training camp and his calling out of Buss during training camp last year for a contract extension.

Given all that, Shaq is still 10000000 times the person that Kobe is - my comments toward Shaq were due to the frustration of the last season

Don't Blame Buss

Clearly, Shaquille has realized the error of his ways. It's a shame that the Lakers chose to keep Bryant instead though. Can't blame you for your frustration!

Did a little diggin online out of curiosity, here's the list of point guard MVPs:
Bob Cousy in 1957, Oscar Robertson in 1964 and Magic Johnson in 1987, 1989 and 1990.

Here's the remarkeable part though - no PG has even finished in the top 5 in voting since Johnson. Pretty strange considering how important the PG to the flow of a game.

Yep, even rarer than I thought. And who are we kidding....Magic might have played point guard, but he is 6' fataing 9" and one of the top 5 players ever to play. Makes Nash's accomplishment even more special in my opinion.

Cousy and the Big O were more 'guardish' in size. 2 HOFers that Nash joins as true point guard MVP's. Wow!
