Default My car isin't what I thought it was

Just got back from getting my brakes done on my 2003 honda civic si and found out by the mechanic that when he ran the VIN that it is really an EX model. WTF. He said the body is a SI but the engine isin't. I was speechless. He ran the VIN on the auto value web site and it shows my car as being built in the U.S and being a Honda civic EX. I just now checked my bill and it was sold to me as a SI. now what? Do I go back and say...excuse me you sold me a car that has the wrong engine. Give me some money back. Plus the difference in insurance for 5 years.

This was the first time I ever took it to someone ther then the dealer. Do you think they knew all along and didn't say anything?

what now?

any thoughts?

when your insurance agent put in the vin they would have known the model and charged you for the correct vehicle.

Did you always believe you were that little bit faster than other civics out there over the 5 years?

I bought it new at crowfoot village honda. What about the price of the car? I was under the impression that I bought a new SI not an EX. Do I have any recource with the dealer for selling me something that wasn't what it was?

I imagine that the dealership would owe you something....this isnt a chop-shop its a dealership (and a rather large one at that). I dont know who you talk to about this. A lawyer, the dealership, I dunno but you need to talk to someone

Just looking at my car insurance and it says SI with the same vin. So they were charging me for wrong insurance potencially.

do you know if there's any way you can visually inspect the engine in a convenient way to tell whether it's an ex or an si? At this stage I would be looking to be really certain, as this suggests a long history of major errors by more than one party.

IIRC, the US didn't have an si coupe in 03. This was a Canadian only model, and the VIN may be showing up as an ex because VIN is a US based system and they classify it that way.
What kind of engine does it have? 1.7 L or 2L?

edit: more specifically, the US 03 SI is a funny bullet like looking hatchback that was called the SIR in Canada. My guess is you have the Canadian only si (coupe) and the VIN is throwing off your mechanic. A 2L engine will confirm.

Yeah there is no way you can mess that up. Two different styles. How can you not tell with the hampster in the wheel motor with the ex ( I also have a 02 ex) and the cat in a hampster wheel si?

you honda people are funny I always get a kick out of the ricers trying to race me in my talon...

Does the VIN on the dash match the VIN on the engine?

As I recall, the VIN may also contain information about colours and what not. Does the rest of this information match your vehicle?

In the olden days, VIN plates could be stripped off written-off vehicles and replated onto stolen vehicles... I thought this was impossible now, though.

You need to find yourself a new mechanic. The 2003 si didn't have a better engine then the other civics. The si model did have a sunroof and other upgrades. Only the SI-R which only came in the hatchback had the better engine.

2006-the new and current styling is when the SI had the bigger engine.
