Default Burning downloaded content from a Mac

Please help!

My sister is a silly Mac user and has completely legally downloaded a tv show (Mad Men). It is .avi format.

I know little about DLing then burning and even less about Macs.

Can anyone give instruction on how to burn this to DVD? To compress it so that we can maximize the # of episodes per disc (preferably without compromising quality too much)? Can .avi even be burned with reasonable quality to disc?
