CFL Individual Award Nominees

The CFL named the nominees for individual awards a few days ago. They will announce the finalist per division on Tuesday, November 4th.

Let say you have a vote for the winners, who are you going to pick as Finalist for both division, then pick the overall winner and why?

*** I have to think that Henry Burris is a better pick over Anthony Calvillo on the Outstanding Player Award. I am not saying this because I am a homer but if you look at both division, you will see how tough and competitive the West Division are compare to the East Division. Burris had to play BC Lions, Saskatchewan and Edmonton a lot more than the easy target Toronto, Hamilton and Winnipeg. Finalist: Burris vs Calvillo

****This is the year for the West to dominate the Individual Awards. My pick Mike Labinjo has been awesome all season and he is a QB nightmare when he plays. In the East, who else you can pick other than Ben Cahoon. The only way Cahoon will win this award over Labinjo is if the voters look at the stats. Finalist: Labinjo and Cahoon.

**** I have no idea what the voters is smoking if they don't pick Cameron Wake as the Defensive Player of the Year. The guy is a monster and he's been picking on every single OLine he faced except the Stamps.

**** This is the year for the Stamps. Lazeo started as a guard when he gets to Calgary and now he is the full-time center for the team. He is a big influence to the 3 rookie OLinemen Stamps have as a starter. Him and the hogs always gives Burris and Reynolds lots of room.

**** I really think Tsoumpas got a shot of winning this award, unfortunately the voters will look at the stats and they will see Dressler is top among rookies. I have to say these two players would have been the Finalist but they both play in the West.

***** Mr. Automatic Sandro DeAngelis is my pick to win unfortunately my vote does not count. I have to think that CFL voters will pick Tristan Jackson vs Dorsey due to their stats. But in the meantime Snadro is always there when Stamps needed some points. Cocah Hufnagel never even think twice when it comes to making decision if he can put Sandro for a field goal or not. Burris should win it, I think that they will give it to AC though. AC and Burris the clear choices from each conference.

Labinjo was nice for the Stamps this year but no way should he win it. I think he is at best the 3rd best option in the west alone. Paris Jackson had a very good year and is nowhere near as inconsistent as Incompleterson.

Ben Cahoon can come out of the East in a group of very underwhelming candidates.

Cam Wake wins it easily. No need to have another nominee from any other team or division. Nobody was close to him and he wins it in a walk. I am sure there will be some moron Rider fans who their guy should win but then their team can go 0-18 and they would be pissed if they didn't sweep the awards.

I am not sure whether Lazeo is the best individual linemen this year but he did a great job of leading that line and making sure the young guys were successful. In a year where nobody really stands out I think giving it to the guy who lead the best line in the CFL is not a bad choice.

I agree with Ozsome, Tsumpas deserves it from the West but Dressler has the flashy numbers and hype so he likely is given the award instead. Rodriguez had an more impressive year but it was for the Ti-Cats so he doesn't win it.

Dorsey was much more consistent throughout the year than Jackson and for me substance is better than flash. Dorsey thoroughly deserves it as the one bright spot on a terrible Argo team this year.

OP - Burris over Calvillo (although really, I think it's between Burris and Wake. West finalist will win this hands-down)
OC - Labinjo over Cahoon; such an incredible physical specimen, it's easy to forget he's Canadian.
ODP - Wake over Pile; Wake is by far the easiest award-winner to pick.
OR - Rodriguez over Dressler; great competition between the two. I'd love to see Tsoupmas in there, but the two receivers is a great storyline.
OL - Makowsky over Flory; excellent consistency despite all the injuries and changes the the backfield and OL line.
OST - Dorsey over DeAngelis; Congi may get in there too, given that Saskatchewan has been in a lot of tight games, while DeAngelis hasn't been called on for as many clutch field goals as in the past.

MOP - Wake. Wake was absolutely dominant this year - 23 sacks is crazy.

Canadian - Cahoon. Cahoon had another great year and catches everything thrown his way. Arguably the best Canadian receiver of all time?

Defensive Player - Wake. NFL bound too...

O-lineman - Makowsky. He was moved to all three line positions this year - guard, tackle and center. Flory could also take this one as well.

Rookie - Dressler. I think Dressler gets this as he stepped up big time when the Riders receiving core was decimated by injuries - and was a major factor in helping the Riders thru those injuries to the playoffs.

ST - Congi. Tough one here. It's a coin toss between who wins the West nomination between DeAngelis and Congi. Both had great years - I'll guess that Congi wins it this year as DeAngelis won it last year. Dorsey had a great year too - the Argos were awful though and I think you have to go with the guy on a playoff bound team (Congi or DeAngelis).

Also I might say Elgaard is better than Cahoon, or at least his nearest Canadian competition.

Kamau as top Canadian? As top anything? I guess he's had a good season, but still... I don't think any of us in this thread picked him.

The rest of them all match my picks, except for Doug Brown, who I think is a decent nominee.

Overall, I'd say the awards list is a better reflection of the balance of power in the west with two riders, two stamps, one lion and one esk, as opposed to the all-star list and its 13 lions.

I'll re-iterate arguably - my pick would go to Elgaard but Cahoon would definately get mentioned in that discussion. Top 5 for sure - the guy is money.

Would be very surprised if Burris lost the MOP award. AC was great but just can't see him winning it. And Peterson as the West's nominee for Canadian? He likely would've been my last choice of the 4 but there ya go I guess...

^Yeah, I think the head to head matchup between Montreal and Calgary will win the MOP easily for Burris. If all the stats were the same, but Calvillo had beat Calgary twice, he would win it.

I disagree so adamantly. Congi is the best kicker in the league, had a better percentage, has a better season long (league best 55 yarder), has a higher avg distance for kicks.

The only place he got beat was in total kicks and points which is a reflection of Stamps inability to finish off drives or Saskatchewan's low scoring games. Quality is far more important that quantity here.

Congi got robbed. But just like last year he'll get the last laugh. No way Deangelis is getting a ring this year.

Could you be a bigger homer? Sandro had a great year, what fault of his is it that the offense sputtered a few times? Sandro not only consistently leads or is near the top of the league in scoring for kickers, but he is the most clutch kicker in the league. You'd be hard pressed to find too many ppl across the league who would take Congi over Sandro.

The difference was .2 not exactly a world apart.

Sandro also kicked a lot more Extra Points and Field Goals so it doesn't appear that the Stamps offense was unable to score but that they, unlike the Riders, were often able to drive the ball into the red zone at will against their opponents.

The notion that he got "robbed" only proves what a homer you are.

Quantity and Quality is more important than just quality here which is why Sandro got the nod over Congi and why it was the right call.

FYI - Brian Kelly was my favourite receiver growing up, and definitely one of the better receivers to play in the CFL, but he wasn't, nor is he now, Canadian:

And as for the comments about Kamau Peterson, a few years back you'd have been dead-on - he was a bum. But anyone who watched the Eskimos closely this year, especially after Jason Tucker went down, realizes he became the go-to receiver for Ray, and made so many catches in touch areas. You don't catch 100+ passes for over 1,300 yards by fluke. He's a deserving Western nominee.

I wasn't a homer at all. I just think Congi deserved it more this year.
