IE 6 problem.

I use MSN, and whenever I check my mail through IE6, it crashes after about 5 minutes.

Event Viewer said this...

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module msvcrt.dll, version 7.0.2600.5512, fault address 0x00036e5a.

If I knew how to reinstall IE, I would....but alas, I don't.

So, what DO I do?

Well upgrade to IE7 would be a good start, but I am going to assume that there is something which is preventing you from doing this, or you would already have done so.

Another option is to not use MSN and use a client which lets you open your default browser instead of the one that they made. I *think* Trillian has that option, but it has been so many years that I don't remember for sure.

To reinstall a windows component , go to control panel / add and remove programs, and on the left side there should be add/remove windows components. Remove then Add again, you might need a disc or something, I don't remember for sure.

Thanks. I've never taken the time to upgrade to IE7. No specific reason why.

you'll find that will solve a bunch of problems (some of which you probably aren't even aware of). Also, learn to love tabbed browsing ... frankly i don't know how anybody goes about their day without it.

FWIW, Microsoft is well into the beta stages of IE8. I'm sure your problem is annoying (sounds like it, anyway!), but you could just wait until Microsoft comes out with the full public version of IE8 and do the wholesale upgrade then.

If you don't want to wait, then yes, just as Rathji said, upgrading to IE7 should solve your problem. You could then choose to upgrade to IE8 (or not) later on.

For an automatic updating process on all your Microsoft software (including IE), visit Windows Update. It will search your computer for available updates. Choose the ones you would like it to install, and it'll do the rest.

A somewhat random, but not totally comprehensive test of what a browser is capable of. It is considered a benchmark for current browsers.

Just so you have a point of reference, Opera 9.6 scores ~85 Chrome scores ~78, Firefox3 scores ~71 and IE8 scores ~21.

This test doesn't mean alot, but it is an easy way to figure out how your browser ranks.

I recently had some problems with IE7 crashing on one of my boxes. I can't upgrade it because it has Windows 2000 server on it, and IE7 won't install on Windows 2000. In addition to virus scanning, scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. That resolved my problem.

Seriously, if you're using IE6, get IE7. If you're using IE7 and have the ability to install Firefox, do so! You'll be getting good karma for lessoning the pain that web developers have to go through.

Had no idea there was a 3rd test. Safari scores 75 so I would put IE 6 somewhere in the 2-3 out of 100 range.

When IE 6 was a year old, we were all checking out how RON PETROVICKY and IGOR KRAVCHUK where doing in the Salt Lake City Olympics.

I might recommend you at least give firefox a trial for one week. It's incredibly customizable and it has a lot of very useful tool add ons. Just give this link a quick look for a list of the most popular tools:

Just for MSN, it opens through IE.

I installed 7, and haven't had any problems since.

can you just set FF to be the default browser? so then when MSN tries to open a browser it just uses FF?

I recommend just adding a quick link (click drag from favorites) on your firefox browser above your tabs, keep your self signed in and just click that link when you have an email.

Firefox -> Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> System Defaults -> Check now (next to "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup") -> Yes

Does that make MSN open links in Firefox? Or is MSN's file handling of URL's controlled internally instead of by the system variable?
