Default From my PVR to my Computer?

Hey all,

Wondering if a tech genius can help me with a problem.

My wife is going to be on Breakfast Television on Wedneday of next week. We will be setting the PVR to record it but we are wondering how we can get it form the PVR to our computer.

She wants to use the footage as promo material on her website and blog.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

If it is a Shaw PVR I don't think they allow you to do that unless you hack it somehow.

Yeah it is a Shaw PVR.

Will different PVR's allow you to transfer to your computer? I have always wondered how all those TV clips get on Youtube so quickly.

If anyone has an idea how we can get it on a hard drive somehow that would be dynamite.

People use a video capture card on their computer to create a home-made PVR.

I've used MythTV for a few years (although I borked it a while ago and haven't gotten around to fixing it). I can grab the TV shows I recorded and slice and dice them any way I want.

The firewire port on the shaw PVR Is the best way to connect your computer to it I believe..... BUT shaw has that disabled and I doubt they'll ever enable it.

i wonder if anybody has a capture card on their computer that could help you out? I've been looking for a way to do this for years but I've never really found a good way to do it didn't involve a capture card.

Yeah she asked about that already. She was told they were going to charge her $100 or something ridiculous.

Brutal. For $80 you could buy a dvd recorder and record it yourself and then grab the file off the dvd. Of course I've never done this so I'm not sure how it would work. I assume the process would be similar to ripping a standard hollywood dvd. Then if you weren't happy with the dvd recorder you could always return it.

There are FTA PVR's that allow you to hook up an external hard drive. From there it is a matter of connecting the HD to your PC and converting to the format of your choice.

On my 6416 I had that hooked up to my computer via firewire and i was able to record direct to my hard drive. it was about a year an a half or 2 years ago now, and I don't remember what programs I used. I'll do some searching.

Edit: actually I think I used this guide to set mine up:

I used Capdvhs I know for sure.

they may have disabled this feature now though. i'm not sure.

The firewire port has to be enabled by law so it will work providing you have firewire on your computer.

There is a way to enable the firewire, a link to how to was posted in these forums in a thread I probably created to ask the same thing. I never followed up on it since we moved to the country shortly after and had to give up the PVR. We just bought a DVD recorder and it accomplishes the same thing really.

Edit : here is the posting I made, and a few posts in is the link to instructions
