Default The Office: Going to Winnipeg!

Winnipeg is about to take a star turn in the offbeat TV comedy The Office.
An episode scheduled to air Nov. 13 has star Steve Carell, in his role as office manager Michael Scott, taking a business trip to the windy capital of Manitoba.

Emmy-winning writer Brent Forrester chose Winnipeg as a suitable destination for the cringe-inducing boss of fictional paper firm Dunder Mifflin.

Office underling characters Oscar Nunez and Andy Bernard make the trip to Winnipeg with Michael. The episode centres around Michael having an affair with the concierge at a hotel in the city.

"Michael Scott is trying to turn Winnipeg into a city of international intrigue in his mind so much that he wants this business trip to be all it's cracked up to be. We sort of imagined that Winnipeg in November was not Paris in summer, so it's a little colder and a little lonelier than he hopes," Forrester said.

I want to guess Winnipeg is going to come out little desolate looking here....

It seems like Michael himself wrote the most recent comment on the article:

I wonder if this has anything to do with the Simpsons penchant to make fun of Winnipeg.

That's it, back to Winnipeg!

Winnipeg gets made fun of, but when i went there a couple of months ago I found it to be a great little city. Lots of history (way more than Calgary could ever hope for), quality cultural institutions, and lively inner-city vibe that is not unlike the one seen on 17th ave. I definitely found it to be more interesting than Edmonton.

The Native ghettos were a little disturbing however...

According to the CBC article, they never filmed in Winnipeg. The whole episode was shot in California apparently

California = Winnipeg

They had to pick a place that made Scranton, Penn. look good by comparison.

Late afternoon, another day is nearly done. A darker gray is breaking through a lighter one. A thousand sharpened elbows in the underground. That hollow hurried sound of feet on polished floor, and in the Dollar Store the clerk is closing up, and counting Loonies, trying not to say, "I hate Winnipeg." The driver checks the mirror, seven minutes late. The crowded riders' restlessness enunciates that the Guess Who suck, the Jets were lousy anyway. The same route every day. And in the turning lane, someone's stalled again. He's talking to himself, and hears the price of gas repeat his phrase: "I hate Winnipeg." And up above us all, leaning into sky, our Golden Business Boy will watch the North End die, and sing "I love this town," then let his arcing wrecking ball proclaim, "I hate Winnipeg."

Of course.

They shoot every episode of the Scranton-set show in California, why would they go to Winnipeg to shoot? We probably won't even see any exterior shots anyway, unless they feature a lot of fake snow.
