The main reason for me is that for the most part, I only play sports games, so I really wasn't using the XBOX. I enjoyed gutiar hero, and some of the niche games, but for the most part... demos got boring, and my HD-DVD drive became obsolete.
As a movie-file, the fact that the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player was a big deal to me. Had HD-DVD won the format war, I'd probably still have the XBOX. Down time between sports games are now filled with movies.
Game play, and online experience, you're probably going to find that it's the same.
One of the other benifits is that the PS3 was much easier to make into a media centre than the XBOX. I can copy music, pictures, movies, etc onto the hard drive. For the life of me, I could not find how to copy... streaming was the only way to make the XBOX media options make sense. I stressed over conversion, and streaming programs, etc.
As a former XBOX owner, I say I'm more than happy with my PS3. If I were to reccomend one over the other, PS3 would be it. I'm also using wireless, so I made sure the unit I purchased had the built in wireless adapter.
Hope that helps.

I have been trying to set up my 360 recently so I could get custom sound in NHL 09, but man it is a PITA with the 360, I hate it compared to the PS3.
PS3 is SOOOOOOO much better for media, it is not even close.

Fairly soon the Xbox is getting a major overhall for it's Live service. Anyone know if it is getting any upgrades to it's media center software? It wouldn't take much for MS to turn the xbox into a real media platform.

I own both and a good summary (in my opinion) is that if you're into multiplayer and want a really nice integrated local and multiplayer experience I would stick with the XBox because of XBox Live. If you don't care about that then I would go with the PS3 just because of the extra functionality of Blu-Ray. You will be missing out on some of the exclusives (i.e. Gran Tourismo on PS3 and Gears of War on the 360) but for a majority of the games they seem to be coming out multiplatorm so you shouldn't need to worry too much. I guess developers are starting to realize it makes more sense, financially, to make a game for the two 'big boy' consoles (like the next Final Fantasy) or make games timed exclusives (like BioShock) rather than sticking with one or the other.

Earlier on I would agree but now I don't think it's that much better at all, especially since you pay. Unless you want to go online with obscure games(xbox userbase helps) picking either will have offer a good online experience. On the ps3 side we have over 500 games played in nhl09 and there's guys on all the time.

Does Xbox still charge for Xbox Live? One of the reasons I switched and bought a ps3, I enjoy online play but don't play it enough to justify paying monthly. Oh and the blu-ray player which always gets the newest firmware, at the time a blu ray player was the same price as a ps3 and I was wanting to get one.

Yeah, it's $60 a year for gold membership. I realize free is better but $5 a month is nothing to lose sleep over.

Might as well buy a game with that $60 though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Xbox better for Rockband with the ease of downloading the extra songs?

You can share songs with the ps3. Say you have 5 friends with ps3s, you can pool money together, make a "store" account and download the songs to each of your playstations using that account. I think the max is 5 active systems.

If you have a wife who likes platformer games, don't get the xbox360... even if it is easy to mod. Then you'll have a pissed off wife who hates the system and the games and wants me to do yard work instead of embracing the system and the games and playing them with me.

Is there a new PS3 coming out next month or in December? I read something about a slimmer design and 160G hard drive, still happening or no?
I've been doing some searching but can't find any real info.

What are the benefits to the bigger HD in these units? Is that much content loaded onto them?

So it's basically and extra $100 to go from 80G to 160G.
I'm not sure if I even care about the hard drive, I download a few demos on my 360 and then delete them, never really wished I had more capacity. But I guess if you're going to be downloading movies then you'll need the space.

PS3:
A decent number of games that come out force you to install data to the hard drive, with the worst of them being around a couple gig (Devil May Cry 4 comes to mind). Downloading demos of games (or full games off PSN) could potentially eat up a good amount of space.
That being said, I have the 60 GB version and I haven't run into problems with the hard drive space as of yet.
The nice thing, as I'm sure has been mentioned previously, is that if you want to upgrade you HD in the PS3 you can buy any size of 3rd party HD and plug it in, with warranty.
Xbox 360:
I believe the 360 will start allowing developers to install data to the hard drive, so the size of the HD may become more important if this feature is widely utilized. Game demos and videos will quickly eat up space space if you queue up a lot of them. I have the 20 GB hard drive and I had to start cleaning up the game demos and videos fairly quickly, lets say less than a year.
