I'm going down to the States next week and want to be able to use my iPhone without roaming charges. What's the best way for a non-techie to unlock it? If I find a 7-11 or something I've been told that all I have to do is pick up a card and that they're easy to install. Is this all I have to do and is it easy to do?

If you have a 3G it doesn't look like there is an unlock yet.

Has anyone tried Quickpwn (windows) on the first gen?

I've been told that this kind of unlock can be done. It's apparently just a matter of replacing the card. I know this has been discussed here but that this kind of unlock can be done. Any advice and instructions that would help me is appreciated. It is a 3G.

I see.. hardware unlock. Not something I'd try personally.

I just upgraded to 2.1 and unlocked with Quickpwn

I have a good friend who works in this field. He says it's easy. He's doing his 3G iPhone now - ordered a card or something on line. I'm actually having lunch with him Thursday and will ask him, but he has told me it's just a matter of replacing the card, easy even for a tech dolt like me.

There's a reason no one can give you any advice. It's a dumb thing to do. It would be easier to by a burner phone in the States since you can't get prepaid data cards anyways.

I don't get why people say the hardware unlock is dangerous, it's just an additional SIM card, it's not like you have to open and solder your phone.

When I had my 2g iphone I had it hardware unlocked, never had a problem with it, it was easy to do as well.

Finally got my iPhone (16GB Black) on Friday. This device is sweet. I got my contacts moved over from my old SIM card, gmail set up, wifi running, and downloaded some free apps.

Does anyone know how to sync Google calendar with the calendar app? I will 'google' it as soon as I'm done posting here, but I just wondered if anyone had an easy surefire way.

Thanks!

http://www.nuevasync.com/

That's what I use to sync my calendar and contacts with my phone.. it's push and does it over the air which is nice.

It can be a bit quirky from time to time and what I find most annoying is Google's weak contacts, but it does work for me.

Hey Photon - I tried the nuevasync and it's seemed to work only half way on my iPhone. I get all the settings in my Mail, Contacts, Calendar settings, but Calendar app doesn't seem to be getting any events from google calendar.

I've played around with the push/fetch data and turned off/on the settings to sync my calendar, but with no luck.

I've also checked the NuevaSync Sync status report page and it says:

Sync Status Report
Your phone/device has not contacted our server yet.

Ideas?

One thing to keep in mind is that NuevaSync only does the calendars that you have edit permissions on. So if you're like me and are mostly using public calendars (ie. I've got Flames games and other sporting event calendars that others have created) those won't sync. Because of that I haven't set up NuevaSync so that's all the help I can give.

I realize that. In the Detailed Status Report on NuevaSync, there are 3 calendars that are my own that will sync and 3 public calendars (ie. Flames games) that will not sync. I am not getting any of the calendars that should be syncing.

Hm, are you on the latest firmware?

Not really sure on how to diagnose troubles with it, I basically set it up and it worked first time for me.

I'm not sure where on the nerd spectrum this places me, but I found this video to be golden. My problem arises from me using my iphone as a tv in the mornings for my commute to work. I load videos to watch on the train, but the videos are often around 55 minutes long while the train ride is only 45. Many a morning I'll end up at my destination right as I reach the best part of the show, forcing me to watch during my lunch break. My problem is I don't have a stand, so I end up holding it instead of kicking back and relaxing with my feet on my desk. Surely there has to be a better way. Ingenious little Asian dude to the rescue!

That paperclip stand is brilliant. Now if I only had a paperclip...and a printer to print the template...

I got it to work. For some reason, when I was on wifi, the data wouldn't be pulled down (for gmail, google calendar, or anything). I switched wifi off and went to 3G and everything came down. I think my session timed out or something (I'm using airuc at the University). I am currently on wifi again and everything seems to be fine.

Nuevasync seems to be great. I'm not sure about having a third party have "access" to my gmail account, but I like the convenience.

Be sure to remember to bring up safari whenever you enter campus. Your phone will connect to airuc, but without starting up safari and signing in you won't be able to pull anything down. Drives me insane to be quite honest. I'll either go half a day before I realize that my phone hasn't actually been connected, or I'll properly connect and then 3 hours later get secretly dropped from airuc (which I won't know about because it will always say I'm connected). I've started not using airuc lately for those two reasons.

@oilers_fan: I didn't print of the template ... I just kind of eyeballed it best I could. It looks incredibly gimped, but it works wonderfully. My only problem was getting the tiny bend at the end of the base (the arms that hold the phone in place). Rifling through an old supply case I managed to find an old floppy drive. I jammed the end of the paperclip into an open slit and bent it from there.

I'm not sure if copy & paste has come up yet, and I haven't tried this, but here's a link to a podcast called iCali. She goes through stuff about the iPhone and is cute.

iCali

...did you know that you can click the micropone portion of the headphones to end a call?

I've watched a few of the podcasts and have learned a bit each time.

Edit: Oh yeah, I can't tell if the vid plays properly, as I haven't got YouTube or, apparently, Quick time working yet... Sorry.
