I've stayed at the Sahara for as little as $50/night. It's not that bad and it's at the end of the strip. It's been a while though. Who knows what prices are like now with the state of the economy.

I think one of the cheapest places on the strip is the Casino Royale. It's sandwiched in between the Venitian, and some other big hotel It's pretty crappy in terms of quality and ambiance, but is dirt cheap compared to the rest and close to everything you probably want to do. It's sort of like if they stuck a Motel 6 in Monte Carlo....it's ghetto, but hey, you're still in Monte Carlo.

Stayed at Tropicana for $49 a night in august. Don't recommend going back there. Stayed at Imperial Palaca a couple times for $79 a night, not a bad hotel, nothing special but it is almost right in the middle of the strip.

I have stayed at the excalibur for a pretty decent price.
A few years ago a few friends and I made a road trip down to Vegas and California. We were in Vegas for a night and stayed at the Planet Hollywood for something like $140. We had a great time that night so we decided to stay an extra night. We called down to the front desk and they charge you what they call a roll over rate...which is basically a really cheap rate as they believe you are staying to gamble more.. we ended up staying at Planet Hollywood for $40/night. We did this for 3 straight nights!
It is a gamble as if they do not have any room then you are somewhat screwed but if they do have room they charge you the roll over rate which is a fraction of the actual price.
With the economy the way it is I have heard Vegas has taken a real big hit so there are a lot of rooms available. IMO it is worth the chance to book one night and then try and get the roll over rate...

Go here: http://www.vegastripping.com/vegasdeals/
You can get some great deals and may not have to compromise much on quality. Unless you like downtown (Freemont Street), I wouldn't stay off the strip.
Excal, NYNY, Luxor are a few decent places where you can get cheaper prices.
I've only ever stayed at MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay. You can get good deals at MGM Grand, we once payed $65/night, though that was through rewards offered through the players club.

The Harrah's group of resorts is offering some deep discounts on rooms in December. Some rates were as low as $32/night. The Harrah group includes Harrah's (obviously), Caesars Palace, the Flamingo, Bally's, Paris, the Imperial Palace and the Rio. Go to https://www.harrahs.com/hot-deals/ and choose Las Vegas from the "Select a Destination" drop down list. Change the "Calendar Options" on the subsequent page to the dates your interested in.
Edit: I just did a search for December and the $32 rate was for Imperial Palace which is a dive but they were offering $70 at the Flamingo and $79 at Paris for the same nights. Paris is a pretty decent place with a great location on the Strip.

A few years ago buddy and I rollled in to vegas at about 3:30 in the morning and when the Tropicana was full we tried the Hooters Hotel/Casio which is right behind it.(chosen soley because it was about 100yds from where our bikes were parked and we were really tired) Not technically on the strip but it's about half a block off of it so for all intents and purposes it is on the strip.
It's pretty new so it's clean.
And of course, it is at a classiness level that you'd expect from Hooters.
I think it was ~ $89/night over the weekend and $69 durring the week.

When we stayed at the Luxor we got it for about $90 per night. But that was also a Monday/Tuesday night stay.

+1 for the Casino Royale. It's kinda rugged, but your only there for a few hours a night anyway. Be sure to stay on a Sunday night if you can, it's usually 40% less at least. $49-69/night

I stayed at the Imperial (middle strip) for $40/night last February when I went there before a Flames road trip.

A few of us (including Aeneas) stayed at a Travel Lodge on the strip (across from Circus Circus). Real cheap. The pool was drained dry and locked up.
This one I think:

The Riviera was free when we went down for the 8 Ball championships a few years ago. You get what you pay for (it was a total dive)

I just got back from Vegas on October 6th and checked out two reasonable and clean locations - I checked out Gold Coast to stay there next time cause they have drugstore, liquor board, 24 hour food venue like Ping Pang Pong (fresh spring rolls at 3 a.m. with a beer for bed) a girls dream! And a 70 lane bowling alley (for the chicken fingers and pizza at all hours - not the bowling) and all machines - it's off the strip on Flamingo. I would also stay at Imperial Palace cause I scoped it out, it's right where I need to be on the strip EXACTLY. When I'm doing the shuttle from Gold Coast you get dropped off at Bill's - it's free but still not right on the strip where I want to be.

Only have stayed at MGM or TI. TI was cheaper. Both were nice.
