Chocolate milk is a decent post recovery drink and it's hard to beat in terms of bang for your buck. At about a 1.50 a serving (500ml) it's pretty hard to beat.
Problem is in the speed of the protein availability in milk. If you're seriously trying to gain weight, it doesn't cut it. Also, there are a ton of random ingredients such as the preservative that they use to make chocolate milk which are sketchy.
If you don't want to fork out for anything high end you're better off just mixing milk with something like Nestle Milo, which is essentially the same thing minus some of the funky ingrediants (notably the Carrageenan).
Ideally, what you want imediately post workout is a protein source with an extremely fast uptake (whey isolate). If your goal is to add body mass, then I would add an equal amount of fast carbs (dextros and sucrose). If you're trying to lose weight or maintain, then anywhere from a 2/3 to 1/3 ratio of carbs is good.

How many mammals drink milk past their infancy?
How many mammals drink milk from another species?
Milk is meant for calves to grow into cows. Not for humans to grow into cows.
You don't really think the purpose of these ads are for OUR benefit do you?

How many mammals can create things like ice cream and cheese?
How many woman would be willing to let themselves be milked for human consumption?
That's the thing about being human, we can use our intellect to use the resources around us, and make it into something we can use. Sure a lot of this is marketing, but some people generally enjoy the taste of milk and milk products.

Respecting all living species and "using our intellect" to evolve > Taste

I'm a chocaholic, seriously...if I haven't eaten chocolate all day I cannot go to sleep without a fix. But on topic, when I lived with my parents I drank probably a liter of milk per day, but after I moved out I stopped.
I do drink about a glass of chocolate milk per day though, with lunch. Its a great energy boost with no crash. You don't "feel" it like you do with other drinks, but I don't need to get high from a drink from 7-11 and I'm still wide awake come the end of the day.

Lets just ignore for a minute the fact that it WORKS....actually, did I mention that it WORKS....or should I mention AGAIN, that it WORKS?
Get it already? It WORKS!
Milk is an essential part of a healthy diet.
The hilarious thing is.....milk for 'calves'....is actually a different kind of 'milk.' Nobody 'milks' the Angus Cows running around on the range producing calves each year. There are specific cows that produce a specific blend of milk that humans are MEANT to drink.
So, scream all you want....but it'll only make you look more ignorant as to the effects and importance of milk in our diet.

Well, my doctor tells me to either drink milk or take supplements, so I opted to drink milk. Its good to know that chocolate milk is good for you, because that's mainly what I drink. Its so tasty!

Should you really be drinking chocolate milk after a workout if you're trying to LOSE weight? Seems counter-productive to me

Well, the point of working out is to tear muscle tissue, and when you're done you need protein/carbs and a few other things to help repair them.
Chocolate milk provides that.
And if those 333 calories are breaking your diet.....something else is wrong.

And yet, chocolate milk is anywhere from 1/2-1/10 the price, depending on if you buy pre-maid stuff or not.....and it works BETTER, IMO.

Yes calves do drink the milk from the same cows that we do. Where the hell did you get that piece of information from? The dairy cows give birth to calves and those calves get their milk from the dairy cows.
How long you been working for the Dairy industry?
Milk is not an essential part of a healthy diet. A diet can be very healthy without dairy and generally is more healthy. Milk provides calcium and protein which can easily be taken in other forms.
Not going to comment on the post-workout thing because knowing whats in milk it doesn't surprise me that it works for post-recovery workout.

Well, duh.
But only dairy cows provide milk that we can drink.

Which would explain why numerous studies have said that milk and dairy products SHOULD be a part of a healthy diet, right?

Numerous studies that are more recent and larger in scope have said otherwise and ones not funded by the US dairy lobby. Hell read the book Don't Drink Your Milk by Frank Oski MD former Director of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Medical Center who is not an animal rights advocate. Dr. Spock of baby book fame also agreed dairy was bad. Milk was pushed on the populous in the 1930s as a quick fix for nutrition needy poor people during the depression and some 70 years later we still buy into the hype of the US dairy lobby.
