No more a waste than choosing a candidate. I think the main effect of voting is personal satisfaction.

And who came up with the bright idea of sending me to a voting booth a half hour away, when there is one within 10 min of where I live?

Idiots.

I went to vote at 5pm. In and out in 5 minutes. There was a line, but a fellow came out and said if you brought your voter card, you can go straight in. I had, so I did.

That and being able to bitch about the politicians is the only reason I bother. I've been "eligible" for a long time now and I've never missed a chance to vote on anything. I've also never voted for a candidate that even had a remote chance of winning. I've also never stopped bitching. I'm also a real hit at parties.

That was a fun trip to the polls. In and out in 3 minutes. Would have been even quicker if they'd put the Work Less Party at the top of the ballot instead of the bottom.

I think they stand for less work, which seemed like a good idea.

They will then disappear forever. Nobody will ever see it again and maybe 1 person will know how many spoiled ballots there were in that one box and it will never be heard from or even thought of again.

I worked an election once and that's what we did. Some of the spoiled ballots had messages that appeared to be addressed right to the candidate. Believe me, they aren't going to see it or even know about it.

If you want to spoil a ballot because you don't want to vote for any of them I don't know why you'd even bother voting. It does nothing. Nobody knows. Voter apathy (ie not voting) will get more attention and send a bigger message than spoiled ballots.

It would be the same for rejected ballots too. The only person who knows is the person you rejected it from.
I have a massive problem with both of these statements. You'll have to forgive me but I find them both to be incredibly ignorant.

Wasting the time of the elections Canada people? Who gives a crap about their time. Second voting is my legal right. If I feel the need to express my legally protected right but do not feel that any of the candidates suit my needs then spoiling your ballot is the only honorable thing to do. Staying at home is the more cowardly and pathetic option IMO.

That being said staying at home is your decision, but if you don't put in an effort then don't complain. On the other hand spoiled ballots are a way of showing (even if to yourself) that you want to go vote but find all of the candidates to be unworthy of my vote.

It may not make the news but I'd bet the candidates and parties like to know the number of spoiled ballots in their region. Even if Rob Anders doesn't care that I normally vote Conservative but spoiled my ballot because he's an a-hole doesn't bother me. Fact is I made my statement.

I've noticed that Bell TV has blacked out the eastern stations giving election results. I think I try this every national election, forgetting that it doesn't work.

Some drama already back east! Can't wait until I can talk about it! haha

It's also pretty fun switching between a hockey messageboard in the home city of the Conservative party and an indie rock messageboard comprised of some pretty hard core left wingers in Halifax.

From "Elizabeth May is a great candidate and shouldn't be running against McKay"

to

"Go Torries"

Perhaps, but I did say I was speaking from experience. The people who count the votes quite literally don't pay any attention to a spoiled ballot. It goes into a tiny little pile. Nobody reads it. Or, maybe more precisely, a nobody reads it, and that is the end of it.

Well there's the rub. Even if Anders did care, a few spoiled ballots isn't necessarily an affront or any sort of statement to him. He doesn't know why you did it. None of the candidates know why. As far as they are concerned maybe you spoiled the ballot because you can't read, or some other reason. They won't take it as a message sent to them personally, I'm sure of that. Or more likely (IMO), they won't even hear the number and if they do, the number is so insignificant that they won't really care.

I understand the sentiment but I just don't think it does anything. My vote didn't do anything today either, but I still did it.

Probable. Last poll I saw had May running third in her riding behind MacKay in first and the NDP in second. If May wasn't such a hypocrite she would have taken her own advice and voted for the NDP.

Of course, she didn't... because her goal isn't necessarily to form government, but to ensure she gets a comfortable job down the road from Dion.
