As for Dion saying that he will stay on... bah, I don't think the party will give him the choice.

Now the cons might even lose seats and the liberals will be resurgent if Dion is ousted.
Stupid!

There was also the problem of committee work grinding to a halt with nothing but delays. Government basically stopped functioning at any sort of reasonable capacity. With luck, that will not be present in the next little while, especially given no party will want another election.
As far as Justin Trudeau goes, I agree with CC. His selection would instantly alienate the west (not that the Liberals ever cared about the west), but also hamper them in Quebec.
And frankly, what kind of message does that send to the rest of the country? "We think you are so stupid you will vote for a name despite that name having an utter lack of experience."

Azure is right he is much smarter than Trudeau.
No offense to Devil's Advocate because he is not alone in his belief, but the thought that this guy is appealing to most of the nation is just nuts. He is appealing to liberal folks and nowhere close to a moderate type that could draw new support to the Liberal party.
Personally I hope they keep the train wreck that is Dion but if they have to replace him I wouldn't mind Trudeau being the choice.

Trudeau would be just as unpopular as Dion. A very large portion of the country hates the name Trudeau and would only lead to more trouble within the Liberal Party. I hate the way he is portrayed as some sort of crown prince of Canada by some circles of the Liberal Party and the eastern media.

Correct, as verified by Elections Canada website:
http://www.elections.ca/content.asp?...textonly=false
However, that's just in Alberta ... they close at 7:00 local time in BC and at other times ranging from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time depending on the province.

His time will come... but there will at least one more, maybe two, Liberal leaders before he makes a run at it.

Trudeau running for the Libs would be as smart a party move as the Conservatives choosing Ben Mulroney.
Regardless of tomorrow turns out (PC minority IMO), the Liberals need someone energetic and charismatic if they want any hope in future elections. Dion appeals to hardcore liberals at best, who'll vote for any person's name who's on the red sign, but hardly does he come across as being able to convince any moderate/undecided voters to sway his way, let alone convince any stragglers or people looking for even one good reason to vote for him over Harper.
Just my own thoughts, I think the next PC leader will be someone a little bit more charasmatic and outgoing as well, whenever that is..if the Liberals beat them to that race, that next election will be pretty tight.

Well, looks like Harper's Conservatives will get another minority government. Hey Harper, next time you do your internal polls and see yourself with a majority government, make sure you don't open up your Republican wannabe mouth and ruin the whole thing.
Of course, he wanted an election. Thats what the highest spending government in Canadian history does. Hey, how else can we spend more of the taxpayers' money. Hmmm, how about 300 million for another election when no one wants an election. How about 18 billion to play cops and robbers in Afghanistan?? Hey, the Soviets couldn't defeat the Afghans, but our super powerful Canadian army will bring order to that country. And after all, all Afghans are the same, they have no tribal differences that have lasted many centuries. You'd better get our troops and my tax money out by 2011. Geez, 18 billion to play war games. What an utter waste.
And here's another suggestion, the next time you table legislation for fixed election dates, instead of a bill named Bill C-16, rename it Bill C-"I'm nothing more than a liar and don't believe any bill I table because I'll change my mind because I value nothing". It's your own bill Sweaters. That's what you wanted. But much like you, the bill was nothing more than a fraud.
It sure is going to be hard to swallow this victory Harper. Even though you won, you lost. You're party knows it, the electorate knows it and even you're mutual fund mother knows it. You have the right of center vote all to yourself and you have three left of center parties splitting the vote and you can only get 32%-35% of the popular vote. That is truly pathetic Mr. Prime Minister. I guess it's better to be luckiest candidate in Canadian history than the best one. The good news, at least you'll have another couple of years to spend our money like a drunken NDP sailor. But you're running on borrowed time.Tick tock, tick tock, the bell tolls for thee.

Layton is an imbecile in a pathetic party.
The Green party with ole whatsername running may not get a seat.
Sounds like a slam dunk majority for the Conservatives!
Thankfully the vast majority of Canadians dont belive in right wing politicking!

Um, you do realize the following:
1. Canada is in Afghanistan because Article 5 of the NATO treaty was invoked post 9/11
2. The Liberals under Chretien were the govering party whom first committed troops to the mission
3. The Afghan mission was extended until 2011 by a 198-77 vote in Parliment based upon the recommendations contained in the Manley report (hint: he's a Liberal)

I want Dion to lose badly just so the Liberals pick a different leader.
A strong opposition party that ISN'T the NDP is a good thing.

Your absolutely right...the NDP will never form a government.
MOST Canadians are centrist, and thats the reason the Cons wont get the majority until they move their platform slightly more to the middle. That is also the reason why the Liberals wont take away the Minority or form their own government, they have moved to far to the left. Once they figure that out again and move back to centre, the Cons will be an Alberta Party once again.
