Default Norton Antivirus 2009? Help?

So I'm starting to think this wasn't an update and a virus. Although it seems legit.

I got a prompt to update my Norton to the 2009 version so I hit download, don't even really think about it, go through all the motions, hit restart at the end. But then starting at that point, I'm having problems starting up my computer. First thing, when I restart, a window pops up telling me to unistall norton, I figure fine, probably get rid of the old version so I can install 2009. go through that, restart again. Then, after restart, same window pops up. I go WTH? I just hit cancel instead, deal with it later because I have a paper due the next day. But then I hit firefox, my computer freezes, can't ctrl+alt+delete, doesn't respond to anything. I have no choice but to hit the power bar. I start it up again. It freezes again, but this time, it's when I try to start word. It'll take 3 or 4 starts to get it going. *Sigh*

Help me.

You still there? If you are, download AVG antivirus scan
http://free.avg.com/

Let the scan run and see what it catches.

You can also try an online scan utility like Bitdefender. It's a full functioning version, so you can scan and clean your drive at the same time

http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

Well, right now, I've managed to get Norton working for the first time since the upgrade, so I'm having it do a scan now. Although I'm afraid to turn off my computer. What if it turns off and never turns on again? Ugh, *crosses fingers*

Thanks for the links though. Will give them a try if something happens.

I doubt if you turn it off it'll never turn on again. could have been just a glitch with the norton updater. If you're still concern, you can always download the antivirus utilities I recommended. But I'm sure you'll be fine.

I don't think it's a virus, I did the scan, nothing came up. But it's still freezing like nobody's business.

Not really, it doesn't even need to be idle, just right away, it freezes. But thanks for the thread, I'll see if I can get some more info from it.

You sure it wasn't Anti-virus 2009 (a malware program), and not Norton that you installed? Usually you just get data file updates, not a whole new version of the program when you run the autoupdater.

See here for removal instructions if it is AV 2009.

I hate norton so much, that program drove me crazy!

AVG makes me happy, hope Norton dies a long slow painful death

I really don't think it is Anti-virus 2009. No popups or anything that've come up before I updated. I just got an alert from my Norton saying there was a new version. I've been told that if you got Norton within the past couple years, they'll give you the update to 2009. But if you got it before that time period, you don't get the new version.

But right now, I think I may have figured it out. Maybe. I'd forgotten that for the past couple years, I've been using spy sweeper instead of the Norton Antispyware, so I had it turned off until I installed the new version. I didn't realize it would turn it back on. So, I just turned it off. Only had to do one restart and no uninstall message came back. I'm hoping for the best. Thanks Bruce for those links, if it weren't for them, would have never occured to me to check.
