			There was a movie thread about a month ago and someone was asking about the theatre release; it is next Friday, Oct 17.
They might also be interested in this;

		| ‘‘The Making of Passchendaele’’ goes behind the scenes of the First World War epic that stars, and was written, directed and co-produced by Canadian Paul Gross.
 The Calgary-shot feature received solid reviews after opening at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. This documentary was culled from nearly 100 hours of filmed material and includes interviews with the talent and creative team. It also shows the cast members taking boot camp training to portray the brutal 1917 military battle near Ypres. (Global)

Yes, it is the Monks.

It is new for me here. I have used it on and off over the years on other forums.... mostly to irritate the radical religious right wingers. |

			To me, WWI was is more interesting than WWII and I have been itching to see a good WWI movie... There seem to be surprisingly few of them.

			It should be good. I think is is loosely based on his Granddad's experience as a member to the 10th Battalion CEF, the unit that became the Calgary Highlanders (fine unit that they are!).
 I understand many Highlanders worked as extras.

 Should be good...I am looking forward to it!

			I'm not super familiar with this battle but apparently my Great Grandfather was in this battle as a medic. My Mom just recently found a copy of his enlistment signature as proof. I also have a set of German binoculars that he apparently found on a corpse, maybe from this battle.

			I've been waiting a long time for this movie - friend of mine saw it in Toronto at debut and said it was excellent. I am a big WWI history buff and this is like Xmas for me.

			This should be interesting. My friend's brother in law played a German gunner in the movie (he's a munitions special effects guy and gets the odd non speaking role). World War 1 is just fascinating. And Passhendale was just one of the most awful battles during the war. I've read that they basically were fighting over a near-swamp - veer off the planks and you'd sink into the quagmire. Apparently even now, bones from WW1 casualties are still coming to the surface on occasion because the ground is that soft.

			I'm the only history buff I know, so it's been hard work trying to convince someone to go with me. Been working the romance angle to try and get one of my girlfriends to go with me. Anyone here know how much romance there will actually be? I'm hoping for a little more historical narrative than romance.

I have read mixed reviews... some diehards of the war aspect say the romance part is bigger than the battle. Others say it is a typical romance perfectly woven into the what was happening at the time.

I think it is an important part of the movie; but I would stop short of saying it is a chick flick.

			Thanks. My friend's not into chick flicks, but she's really not interested in any history at all, so I was hoping to use the romance to show that it's not just an acted out documentary.

I misinterpreted this the first time, and now my voyeuristic side is disappointed.

			My Great Grandfather lost his hearing at Passchendaele apparently. Kind of weird to think a relative was in a battle that will be portrayed in a movie...I'm going to go see it with my Grandpa next week, it will be interesting to see how he enjoys it.
