The current rumour is a new one-piece shell that was cut out of a single brick of aluminum using lasers and jets of water.

The code name for the new MacBooks is "Brick."

Interesting but what the hell is the practical use of that? Sounds kind of expensive to develop.

Apparently it's going to allow them to make the laptops cheaper. In fact, there's even a new reported $800 pricepoint.

Hang on, lemme dig up the link that explains the process better...

First mention of the new process:

Elaborated a bit:

Links might take a while to load. With the new announcement, MacRumors is getting hammered.

I guess I'm guilty of hearing "lasers" and automatically thinking of high cost. $800 apple laptop would be a massive seller for them.

I wonder if they'll do a black aluminum MacBook and not make it the most expensive.. That's one of the things that irritates me about Apple. Just give me SOME choice please!

Yeah but more choice means delineating the brand a bit, and reducing the exclusiveness of their product line.

For some reason this had me actually laughing out loud.

I hear you though. I wanted a black Macbook, but settled for white because of the price difference.

The way Apple markets/hypes their products would make most other companies look stupid. It's hilarious the amount of energy they can create by announcing an 'event'. It's also amusing that they play along with the high level of interest. They suck up as much as they can.

An $800 aluminum MacBook would send their market share wayyy up. The only thing stopping a lot of people is the minimum $1200 price.

I can't see an $800 Macbook being much more powerful then the ones currently for $1200. The price point of the internals just hasn't dropped enough (quick survey of the market).

That said, a unified aluminum shell would do wonders for heat distribution. My Macbook could cook a turkey in 2 hours if I'm really taxing it.

I just can seem to figure out how exactly you would use a block of aluminum and create a laptop out of it, and make it somewhat functional. Maybe I am just not as creative as the guys at apple.

Well, they need to change something with the current design. With both of my last two Macbooks, the edge of the interior part of the shell (the part of the shell that houses the keyboard, but down near the palm-rest area) has chipped off. I have to keep tape over it to keep it from spreading. I'd love to see a solid aluminum casing, regardless of how it's manufactured or whether the price goes down significantly.

I am not a MAC fan by any sense of the word, but isnt the reason MAC is popular is because it has a higher price point. Wont dumbing down a laptop to the $800 level open it up to the same customer base Dell, HP, and Microsoft have to deal with. The complaining I want everything for free crowd?

I know on Walstreet all they care about is market share, but I thought what made MAC different was that they concentrated and not only dominated, but excelled at their niche.

Also, looking at this logically, how much could a one piece case save them? Is a one piece aluminim case cheaper than legoing in some pieces of plastic? Colour me interested but not amazed yet.

There is a certain level of elitism they try to instill by having slightly higher priced products, but perhaps the predicted economic troubles that still await the U.S. has them thinking about changing up their strategy for the time being.

Besides, it's not like this is replacing a high-end product. The most elite Apple customers (like my wife) will still take a $1800 Macbook Air over a $800 Mac.
