True that. I am unsure of the rights that bylaw officers have if they catch you doing something "illegal"...

I understand the point of the law, I am just saying that people take it way too overboard. If the guy was doing nothing wrong other than allowing his dog on the baseball field, and the dog appeared to be well-behaved, and the the owner can prove he has the ability to pick up after his dog (say, those little baggies), then I disagree with a ticket being given. Seems like a cash grab, or a ###### of a bylaw officer.

I understand WHY the law is set up, but IMO it should only be applied to a dog who is not well-behaved, or an owner who is not responsible.

Nevermind the fact that I'm not a cop...even if I was, I will not be able to formulate a response to your question without pics of said offender, and if she came & whined on CP, she would likely be asked for pics too before the inevitable judgement call by our membership

By-law officers are Special Constables which falls under the definition of a Peace Officer, their authority lies in what they are specifically appointed for, so you do have to comply if they are enforcing the by-laws under their jurisdiction. (ie. An Animal By-law constable can't give you a Parking ticket and vice versa.)

I go to the one by the cemetary on a daily basis, at different times of day. Sometimes it is dead, other times as many as 25-30 dogs there. It is not large in the sense that you can go for a 45 minute walk through the park. (not without covering the same ground)
But spend 45 minutes of your dog playing fetch or with other dogs will give him plenty of excercise; which what it is all about.

I understand the reasoning behind the on-leash bylaw, but here is my rant about off-leash areas.

I would never dream of taking our dog to a playground with small kids. Yet people bring their small kids to off-leash dog areas to run free; then freak out when junior gets knocked over by two dogs playing with one another.

I usually try to take my dog there early afternoon, I'm off work by 4 and it takes me 10 minutes to get home, so I find this to be the ideal time. After 6 most days is when it's the most crowded. I agree with you about the kid thing, especially when some kids are terrified at the mere sight of a dog.

You really have to be aware of what is happening when it is busy.

My husband was knocked down two nights in a row. The first time by a husky going full bore across the field. The next by our own Stewie (who is now 50+ lbs.) while he was wrestling with another good size dog.

Luckily he was only a bit winded and slightly embarassed. There was a lady about 2 or 3 weeks ago; who actually broke her leg when a similiar collision occurred.

I honestly don't understand why people would take kids to a dog park either. My lab is 95 lbs and weighs the same or more than a child and there are lots of dogs there and he likes to have a good time with them.

Luckily he hasn't knocked anyone over yet, it was me that did the damage, I was trying to throw a tennis ball with that chuck-it thingy and for some reason i threw it side arm and well it hit a lady. I felt so bad.

I get very nervous when there are small children around. Stewie looks small (under a foot tall) but he is solid. He is also still a pup and in training. Generally he is pretty good about not jumping up on adults (because we have worked on that); but still does it with kids.

He almost seems drawn to them. He loves people as much as he does dogs; so he approaches everyone. And if a kid runs.... he just thinks it is a game and runs after them.

Then I feel bad; because I am suppose to be the one with my dog under control......

Of course theres the kids who can handle it!

I remember one time I was walking my dog in the off-leash and observed a young family (two kids, perhaps eight and five, both boys with their parents) with their dog who was I'd say about a 85 lbs Lab of some kind.

So the dog, while barreling around plows into the eight year old and totally sends him head over heels. But rather than breakdown and cry, the kid jumps up, slaps a half-nelson on the dog, flips him on his back, grabs him by the scruff and yells "NO!"

This is exactly the right thing to do, the dog goes limp understanding now the hiearchy of the "pack", and papa looked about as proud as a papa could be.

Actually he is a peace officer. If you don't obey he calls his friends the CPS. They take this seriously. Try telling a transit guy or a bylaw officer to go f themselves.
