Default Quebec man buys winning Super 7 lottery ticket - seven seconds after deadline

Naturally, he's suing.

Crappy luck for this guy, but no sympathy from me. He was told at the store he was too late, offered a refund on the tickets, and chose to stick with him. Sucks that he had the winning numbers on an invalid ticket, but maybe he should have bought his tickets just a little sooner...

I heard he bought the ticket on time. The time it took to process it and print it out is what put him over the deadline.

Whatever the case that just sucks. So close but yet so far.....

He should have been there in time for them to process it. Too bad, so sad for him!

Will be interesting to see if he has a valid point on the above comment.

As much as I can feel sorry for the guy, the bottom line is that if the ticket had been processed on time, the random number generator would have spat out a different set of numbers.

Once I had neglected to play the Plus, and my ticket had the number that would have been a $10K winner. I just happened to speak to a guy from WCLC who was in the store (not to complain, but to share the story), and he told me with how quickly the computers run through numbers, the difference between the clerk hitting "no" and "yes" would have given me a different number anyways.

The prick in me thinks maybe he shouldn't have left it for last minute.

You snooze you lose.

There is a real feeling of sympathy on the board today (see the dog walking runaway thread....awesome)

I guess if there is any ambiguity about when purchase occurs vs the deadline is this guy may have something...seems like he bought the ticket before the deadline but it was the system that added the delay that put him over...I say he should get it...

Unless he paid for it beforehand the transaction would not be complete. He knew the ticket he was getting was for the next draw and he agreed to that by saying he still wanted the ticket and then paid for it with the assumption it was for the next draw.

But one of the tickets popped out of the machine at seven seconds past 9 p.m. -- that's seven seconds after Loto-Quebec's deadline.

"I asked him, 'You want to cancel it?' (and) he said, 'No, I'm going to keep it,'" Iranpor said.

Thats true...however if his portion of the transaction is taken care of (say the request for purchase was sent) before the deadline and it was the lotto-Quebec system which pushed him over the deadline then I think he has something.

I disagree. Nothing is instantaneous. It takes time for the request to be sent, processed, validated and returned. If dude waited until literally seconds before the deadline to make his request, and the inherent delays in the system pushed him over, then frankly, I think he deserves nothing. He does not have a valid ticket for that draw with those numbers. Next time, try buying your ticket just a little sooner.
