I hear you. I would rather see the odd dog in a field playing ball than some jerk ruining the property values in my neighbourhood. The bylaw person did drive by this guys house last month, looked at it, and so far nothing has happened. Does anyone know what kind of timeline the city has for dealing with complaints like this?

I guess that explains why they are allowing all the sex offenders and pedophiles out of the prisons so they can house more offenders that don't pay their pet tickets.

BBS and BA, I suppose your points make sense. I guess I just sometimes notice signs, so I see those as meaning "Only here are dogs not allowed off leash."
Mind you I don't have a dog, so I haven't read up on all the rules.

The police had reason to enter his house; to serve the arrest warrant. They see the drug paraphernalia, and either get another warrant to serve while the person is being help, or do a further search.

Point taken... I can see that scenario playing out.
I guess my big beef was that the ######bag basically waited outside my house for the tags to expire so he could ticket me, I'm being sarcastic of course but it was not a long time expired, I have forgotten to re-register my plates for longer period of time and be given a warning. Additionally the ticket was given even though I explained to him about not being the actual owner...
Now apparently (according to another post) they are not allowed to give warnings, I have my doubts about that but assuming its fact, fine write me the ticket... does not giving warnings also mean not telling people "oh by the way if you don't pay this on time an arrest warrant will issued in your name" pretty sure I would have followed up on it with my roomy had either of us known the consequence of inaction. As it was we were under the impression the ticket was a lot like the issuer - a joke.

How did he give you the ticket? If the dog is in your house he would need probably cause to enter it. He would need to know that the dog is in the house and is the dog that the lincense expired for. For all the city knows the dog died in the past year and that is why the license expired or you could be house sitting someone elses dog. I don't see how he had grounds or evidence to give you the ticket.

Kind of surprised at the number of people getting their backs up about this thread - goes to show that the message was a bit unclear. I don't see a problem warning people about this or venting about it, but to expect to get away with a warning does seem pretty unreasonable here. There can't be signs up in every field around the city saying that you have to have your dog on leash - the default understanding MUST be (and is) that places where it's OK for your dog to be off-leash are marked.
Your dog was off-leash - therefore a fine happens. Warnings apparently can't be given anyway, whether you're being nice or not. I agree getting a $100 fine sucks, but it's a consequence of what happened.

I feel like getting in on this thread, but much like the guy that walks in at the end of a movie and asks what's going on, I don't think i'd be much help. I have no opinion that hasn't already been provided here.

I would fight the ticket, but that's just me- I'd probably fight any ticket. Firstly, no signs. Second, no one else around so who are you endangering? If you are a responsible pet owner, then it shouldn't matter if TECHNICALLY there are no dogs permitted.
Of course, this is how I feel about driving- if there are not many other cars around, why can't I go faster than the limit? I guess that is where my philosophy lies, whereas a lot of people on this board think that the law has to be followed right to the letter.
Honestly, I get so mad at cops and bylaw officers, and even rent-a-cops, who think that each little thing matters. If it doesn't hurt anyone, and nothing bad could possibly happen, then don't even worry about it. Be reasonable.
I am thinking about getting a dog, and to be honest, if a bylaw office gave me a ticket for that, I'd fight it 100%. Especially considering the other evidence you have told us about.

But, REDVAN, to your point that it wasn't affecting anyone, the problem is that the situation could very quickly change, especially in a place where young children are going to be or would go to. Isn't it better or safer to put in place laws and regulations that are designed to prevent a disaster from happening - like some kid or parent getting mauled by a dog (not THIS dog - a dog) - rather than reacting to it afterward? That's what the law is there for.
I do understand your point re: these laws and driving - I'm not saying I never inch the needle above the limit - the laws are there to prevent problems. Just because one is not CURRENTLY happening does not mean there is no possibility for a problem to happen.

You're going to re-ignite the driving debate with Redvan?

I too feel I should offer my 2 cents.
I agree that it's the law and it sucks to get that ticket, but the bylaw officer was doing his job. Especially since there may have been complaints in the past. The by law officer may not have been allowed to give warnings, but assuming the OP was sincere about it, the bylaw officer didn't have to be so harsh.
On the other hand, the poster was venting his frustration on an internet forum and expecting some sympathy. He knows it's the law and since there was no around, it was judgment call on his part. Sure it may have come across as whiny and refusing to accept personal responsibility (a rant for another time), but he really got slammed by a lot of you on your high horses. Sure some of you may agree it's totally his fault, others felt sympathy and sided with the OP. There's no need for this thread to degenerate into names and warnings from the mods.
Personally, I think a warning would have been enough assuming the officer was allowed to give them.
Lastly, for those straight arrow posters, do I assume than you drive exactly at 30km/h on school zones, maintain a 2 sec following distance behind the car ahead of you, don't smoke pot (see past CP thread), wear a seatbelt in the back seat of the cab, or jay walk?

Ha! A poorly-chosen example ... should have used another one, but the point does remain the same. I won't taint this fine thread any more with further driving discussion.
