Default Amber alert issued for Edmonton Girl

Pardon if fata...

"EDMONTON - Edmonton police are searching for a seven-year-old girl who was enticed into the SUV of an apparent stranger this morning in front of Belmont Elementary School. Anastasia Marie Whetton, a brown-eyed, brown-haired girl, was wearing a peach-coloured floral dress and white runners when she disappeared. She is about 4'2" tall and weighs about 55-pounds.
Police said the man is driving a newer-model SUV, perhaps a Jeep or Tracker, with the last three license plate digits 179. He is a white man, with blonde, balding hair and silver-rimmed glasses. He is about 6-feet tall was wearing light blue jeans and a dark zip-up jacket."

That's close to my place, I'll keep an eye out. Not that he would be staying in the area.

Safely I assume?

Great news. These things don't often end up that way.

A bit OT...but anyone remember a thread on here a year or two back where there was a position took by at least one poster (maybe more i dont remember for sure) that Amber Alerts were a waste of public air? As in the CBC shouldnt be showing them IIRC.

Maybe I dreamt the whole thing.

Early reports, provided by her biological father, indicate that she had escaped from the suspect's vehicle at a gas station on Highway 16 near the Evansburg area, about 1 hour west of Edmonton.

A guy has been arrested. Get this.

Charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, kidnapping, abduction of a person under 14, and administering a noxious substance.

AND, he is on parole, and is known as a serial pedophile.

What in the flying fata, is he doing on the streets? Screw rehabilitation.

This is why I am a supporter of public castration, followed shortly thereafter by public execution for a pedophile.

If I could be convinced that you could cut off enough of their body that they wouldn't be able to re-offend, then I wouldn't object to them living out the rest of their days attached to a machine ala Metalica's 'One" video.

Then again I have always considered far too soft hearted, so I might be going to easy on them.

Yeah, you're right, you'll get that for sure.

But this guy was a known serial pedophile (whatever that means, how many kids has he assaulted?). He is now charged again with sexual assault and administering a noxious substance. How many chances do people like this deserve?

I am not talking about public castration or anything unrealistic. I am leaning more towards more liberal usage of the dangerous offender status.

We were stopped not once but twice on Hwy 759 near Seba Beach. Friday night on the way to our cabin there must have been 8 Police cars doing a routine checkstop they said. More like something to do with the Edson situation we thought. Then on Sunday we were stopped right after the girl had gotten away. The Policeman was extremely forthright, gave us a descripion of the man and his vehicle and asked us to keep a look out for it.

Definitely a scary time up near our cabin this weekend....

Gratton was sentenced in 2002 to six years in prison and declared a long-term offender. In a tearful police interview, he asked officers to protect him from his sickness because he couldn't stop himself, his lawyer, Peter Royal, said at the sentencing.
Royal said at the time his client wanted treatment to help him deal with sexual fantasies that will never go away.

Sounds like a perfect guy to place near several schools while forgetting to warn the police. Someone needs to be fired for this.

This story boils my blood. Child molesters are the lowest form of filth.

Quote:
Meanwhile, CTV News has learned Gratton has a long history of sexual assaults against children.
Court documents reveal Gratton is a serial pedophile who was declared a long-term offender in 2002.
He sent to prison after being sentenced to six-year sentence for molesting six children. Court documents reveal one of his victims was sexually assaulted 70 times in a six-month period.
Gratton was later released early in 2005 after being granted full parole to a secure custody treatment facility where he received help for his sexual tendencies.
In July 2006, the parole board released him into the community when he showed positive progress -- two years before his six-year sentence expired.
In March 2008, his 10 years of supervision began. Corrections Canada was in charge of his conditions which included no contact with children.
Bernard Pitre, regional director for the National Parole Board, said there was no reason to deny Gratton parole at the time because all reports submitted to the board were positive.
Gratton's parole period ended in March 2008.
"The risk was manageable in the sense that the offender did not re-offend while he was under treatment and while he was on full parole," he said. "It would be a successful parole and indeed it was."

He served 4 years for molesting 6 children?

Yeah I totally agree. Almost makes me sick to know how he got off with so little.

I know this is a slightly off topic, but I wonder how many stories like this we'll need to hear before there are some serious changes made to our legal system. I understand that these things don't change over night but stuff like this has to stop.

The problem is that everyone is pointing fingers in this sort of situation. There are dangerous offenders that have that status overturned on appeal, so that is a judicial failure (or a failure of the prosecuter to present a valid cas on appeal). There are cases where legislation fails to allow a long enough sentence, so that is a failure of the government. The you have these dirtballs getting let out after only serving 2/3 of their sentence because the parole board thinks they are behaving well.

I definitely realize that is very layered and complex..but in this case...the guy requested police helped him because he knew he couldn't stop himself. It just seems hard to have faith in the system when the offender knows that he needs more than he got.
