Default No Shaw in Chestermere for 24+ hrs: Update finally works, I'm sure you care

Man no Internet or phone for more than 24 hours, this sucks. And I can't get 3g in my house for whatever reason. So I can't even surf on my phone.

I'm supposed to work from home but that's no go too.

I've never seen an outage this long!

Probably installing the torrent throttling equipment

What's this "torrent throttling" equipment you speak of?

'Equipment' that determines if you are sending/receiving torrent packets, and cuts your bandwidth when it sees that you are.

May or may not be in place in any number of cities that Shaw services. As I understand it, Shaw will neither confirm or deny the use of said 'equipment'

Still irks me that my $3000 iMac hits about 200k with bittorrent, while my Windows box hits 1500k.

I used to get 200k with Telus, then I switched to Shaw and started hitting 1500k... Then I bought my iMac, and it's like I'm back with Telus again.

I don't get it.

People who buy macs must be rich, therefore they don't need to steal movies.

Orange kthx.

(...and I have an Apple TV. I pay for every movie and TV show I watch. Bittorrent is used for legitimate reasons too, not just piracy.)

Lol are you kidding, they rape us with property taxes out here, way higher than what I paid in Calgary.

Weird about mac torrents, maybe the torrent software?

I'm gonna guess the windows machine can use UPnP to open the correct ports on the router for Torrents to work well. Macs typically use NatPMP which does the same thing, albeit differently (and is not supported on most home routers besides the Airport series).

Manually configuring the ports used by the torrent app on the mac, and correctly forwarding those ports on the router would probably solve the issue.

I know, I just don't often hear about people needing to download enough legal torrent files that are extremely large in size to be worried about DL rates.

Hey man, there are other things you can download that aren't movies or TV shows.

(It's a quality thing. Downloaded movies look like crap on my plasma, I'd rather spend 3.99 to rent a movie in HD on my Apple TV then spend a week trying to find torrented copy that won't look like ass on my TV.)

I use both a Mac and a Vista box, and have used both to download torrents. Both averaged about 90 kbps on my Shaw connection. That said... both were connected via a wireless router so I'm sure that damaged my overall speed somewhat.

Shaw does indeed throttle bit torrent traffic since just a couple clients on one node can wipe out the total available bandwidth to all clients.

Time to move back into town? rent out the Chestermere house and move into your current rental in Calgary when the lease expires.

I find d/l'ing torrents will bring your entire home network to a crawl. I get solid d/l speeds on my wireless laptop, very comparable to what I was getting on my wired desktop. However, surfing the net is VERY slow on every computer in the house while torrents are coming in on even one machine.
