Our league has posted 3 cheap ice times at Christmas time that they're trying to get rid of. Maybe I'll pick one of them up.

Check out stick time. Down here, when there are a lot of people on the ice we'll throw our sticks in and start a pick up game. I've learned more from kids than adults, actually. Kids seem thrilled to teach you how they do anything, and most kids at stick time are damn good players. The games are never too intense, as a beginner and a girl, I am a lot more relaxed in those games than adult pick up or league games.

You're right Ice. Kids are awesome to play with 'cos they're just feeling their oats we have afternoon stick-n-puck where you can't go onto the ice without a kid. Unfortunately I'm usually not out of work to get there in time. And I have to steal someone's kid.

That's cool. I may go up there in Feb or March. The only place I've ever been to in Canada is Quebec. I'm starting to see those Je me souviens plates all over the place. I want to see snow, but Feb. may be too much snow!

Well apparently i did earn their respect ..... i got a call from a buddy who played high school hockey at my school and then played at univ of oklahoma. He heard from his old teammates about a new guy and he said it sounded like me . He said his old teammates said they thought i would quit after the three hits in the warmup and loved that i stuck around and even potted one even though i had to leave early. They told him i just need to work on my skating but they like the toughness and im welcome to play with them anytime but they are still gonna hit me lol ..... so hey thats good i guess

They also said i should play in slower pace games as well so i wouldnt be behind but they dont mind me playing with them cause i dont just go out there and get in everyones way

edit: MY BODY HURTS TODAY .......... EXTREMELEY BAD lol

You'll get used to it. It might not seem like it, but the soreness from getting hit is akin to muscle pain--it's a workout like you haven't had before! As you get more accustomed to it, you'll recover faster. But a "full contact" workout is always going to make you more tired.

My guess is those guys were "testing" you a little--and it sounds like you passed. Hockey players like a guy who can take some punishment.

Just be sure to stretch properly and build up your core strength--I speak from experience. You can save yourself from getting hurt if you keep your core strength and trunk flexibility up there. It sounds silly, but if you do Pilates or Yoga once or twice a week it can protect you from injury when you play hockey.

I say go for it--but if you do yoga, make sure it's not one of those flaky kinds that spends all their time on breathing and centering your shakras. You want one that builds strength and flexibility.

Doing core work with a medicine ball helped me more than I thought it would. And that big blow up stability ball stuff is tougher than it looks. Lots of great ways to use that for improving core strenght and balance.
