Esp since it's not a canadian company. You'd think he's choose esso or something so people could make the association easier.

Well, why should such a huge oil company be receiving a bigger tax break? I agree with Layton on this. Harper is focusing his tax breaks under the wrong brackets.

I liked how all the men gave Elizabeth May the double-cheeked kiss after the debate. I don't know why - it was just...nice.

goodnight all, that was a fun discussion. Didn't change who I was voting for but at least I know who May is now, whatever the use of that is.

So, did anyone make any headway?
I didn't see it. Harper got beat with stuff none of his voters care about but didn't score any points. Dion may have been sleeping. Larry Curly and Moe did their schtik but nothing new.

I know little to nothing about any specific tax break but I can say in general that the concept of giving companies tax breaks to develop capital projects in Canada provides Canadians with jobs and stimulates the economy.

Is this even true?
If it is, good on them. Oil companies pay a higher tax to begin with.

There already is for pension income, this year was the first year.
Do they mean income splitting on employment income between spouses?

He does that to imply Harper's in bed with an American company and also to bring visions of environmental disaster (Exxon Valdez).

The one thing that REALLY bothered me was that neither the other leaders or the moderator referred to Harper as "Prime Minister Harper".
Also, Harper and May were the only ones wearing Canadian flag pins which I liked to see.
The Bloc guy really looked agitated. He looked really mad and didn't come across very well. Layon and his usual I am going to spend, spend, and spend moto was pretty easy to see through.
I am surprised they didn't hammer him on income trusts more though.
I liked Harpers response when he said that Senator Obama supported more troops in Afganistan when the others tried to pin Harper with Bush and try and make the mission in Afganistan a US mission, and not a NATO mission. May really looked stupid at that point.
I also think that climate change is yesterdays news and that the 4 parties that kept bringing it up, really don't understand the real issues of today.

ahh. thanks.
I suppose it's handy to use a fake example so you don't peeve anyone too.
If he said esso, the president of esso would probably feel compelled to respond.

That was May's 5 billion dollar idea, Harper rather blandly stated that we couldn't afford it.
I was called out of the room, but I believe that Harper talked about Seniors getting income splits which is something that they badly need. So I'm fine with that.

Well, it's not a fake example. It is Exxon recieiving the tax break.
The president of Esso is the same as Exxon. He specifically says Exxon to imply the American connection but Esso is afterall, an American trademark Exxon uses in certain countries like Canada and in Europe. It's all the same company, ExxonMobil.
Regardless, Layton only has the same 6 bullets in his revolver and they are all stupid. Exxon, Sweater, Harper wants to destroy Health Care, Harper wants to censor freedom of speech, etc. etc. All B.S. I hope viewers recognize that.

To me, nobody landed a knockout punch today, I don't think that Dion really helped himself and he was challenged pretty hard by Harper on the green shift numbers and he had no answer for it. The wheat board question was a good one, and Harper defended that well by saying they wanted a fair wheat board.
Layton was good and passionate, however his economic promises, and his attack on corporate tax cuts probably didn't help him much right now.
May I thought was good on the environment and completely out of touch on everything else. Her proposals on crime and afghanistan were ridiculous and out of touch, her income splitting suggestion left her wide open for a strong right to the jaw from Harper and I was surprised that he went easy on that.
Duceppe was very good today and help his own, like I mentioned, I hate his politics, but I think he is the most sincere and honest of the candidates and that really came across today.
I think Harper did what he had to do, he was a lot more force full, and he did a better job of going after his opponents, but the format of this debate is inherantly unfair to the Prime Mininster, but overall I was happy with Harper who to me came across as well prepared for this debate and tried to stick to his record, and the fact that Canada is inherantly more economically buttressed then the states.
I would give the win to Harper, but I don't think that we're going to see significant vote shifting, except maybe Dion loses Eastern Canadian votes to the NDP, and the NDP probably loses any good will that they had gained in the West as he pulled the evil Oil Company argument out foolishly.

By extension sure. Thats why I said Esso. Few people walk around with a business card that says exxon in canada or buy gas from a place with an Exxon sign. Lots do both from Esso. That's all I meant.
Maybe proxy would have been a better word than fake.
