Default Grammar question

Which word is correct to use, effect or affect?

"I am writing to you to tell you how you can stand for change and positively effect/affect this situation."

Affect. Just remenber "sound effects" it's easier thab explaining the grammar rule. You can also "effect a change" that's why it's weird.

It's affect.

Effect is a noun. Affect is a verb.

Definately affect. Effect is kinda what results from an action. Like a water dropplet causes a ripple "effect". But a water droplet would "affect" the water. One is an action and one is a result. Just one way of looking at it.

Is it not effect? Or am I misunderstanding the original sentence?

How you determined effect would be the right word bsaed on those definitions is beyond me.
It says clearly under "affect" that it is altering or changing a situation (or something to that extent). Which is exactly what his sentance is describing. Why would you pick effect? Effect is a noun. You can't noun a noun.

So to speak.

Edit: In response to your last post. It's not like "effecting a change" because that's not what his sentance is saying. His sentance is using situation. A noun.

Effect can also be a verb . It's a formal way of saying "to make happen" more or less. But it's kinda passed out of modern usage.

I didn't say he could use "effect" in that sentence. I was just pointing out what made the words confusing. At some time or other we've probably seen effect as a verb...well, deends how much you read I guess.

You're misunderstanding the sentence...

In the original sentence, "siutation" is the noun, and "affect" is the verb acting on the noun.

I wasn't quoting you. So I don't know why you are replying to me. I was responding to RedVan's assertion that he should use the word effect based on the definitions he provided.

So I'm not exactly sure what your point is.

My bad, guess it depends how you read it.

again from wiki...
Usage notes

Effect is often confused with “affect”. The latter is used to convey the influence over existing ideas, emotions and entities; the former indicates the manifestation of new or original ideas or entities:
  • “...new governing coalitions have effected major changes” indicates that major changes were made as a result of new governing coalitions.
  • “...new governing coalitions have affected major changes” indicates that before new governing coalitions, major changes were in place, and that the new governing coalitions had some influence over these existing changes.
So I guess the original statement could be done either way still. But I think KG needs affect

I am writing to you to tell you how you can stand for change and positively effect this situation.

I am writing to you to tell you how you can stand for change and positively affect this situation.

From you "wiktionary" example, "effect" is a noun - so that is correct.
In this case you are absolutely correct sir!
