So I finally got the Red Ring of Death...
I know there are other threads on this but I have a slight problem.
I bought mine off of a fellow CPer and I don't have the original receipt.
Am I totally screwed? I have never had any problems with my machine except the occasional freeze in NHL 08 and now it won't even turn on I just continually get RROD.
Should I just PM him in the hopes that he has the original? I doubt it. In fact the more I think about it the more I'm worried that I got screwed on this sale, but it was like 9 months ago now.

I made an account just to post a reply here. I had this problem 2 years ago and here is what I did. The 360 was released in November 2005 I believe. At first you needed your receipt/standard warranty to get free repairs. But since so many systems failed MS finally gave in and said that EVERYONE for 3 years since the release date (therefore until November 2008) automatically gets a 3 year warranty. Mine broke, l called it in. They asked for my serial # on the machine and that was that. They sent me a Purolator box and I sent it away. I got it back in 2 weeks.
So basically Flip, you have until November '08 to call it in with NO receipt and they will replace it free of charge. After that date, i'm not to sure what happens but I am 99% sure you will need some proof of payment afterwards. Hope that helps.

I talked to a guy from Microsoft and he says that even without a receipt you can pretty easily get your RROD fixed.

Very true! I have never sent in a receipt or had to provide any type proof of purchase.

Call M$ and tell them your 360 got the 3 red lights, they will tell you to troubleshoot, you tell them no it is broken, they will say ok, tell them seriel number, and they will replace it.
You will get a newish one in 2-4 weeks after the phone call. It is made after 2005 right? Even though, they should still replace it.

Just a quick update.
I bought this XBOX off of CRXguy about a year ago. I got the RROD and PMd him. He got the return all set up, emailed me the shipping label, I sent out the XBOX and BAM! last night I get a PM that says the XBOX is back, so I went and picked it up.
Just wanted to give a HUGE thanks to CRXguy for his help. He could have easily just said it was my problem and buyer beware.

If I remember correctly when I had my Xbox fixed for the Red Ring you don't need a receipt.
When you call the Xbox folks, they will ask you to read off the serial code number off the unit.
That will tell them when it was made and if it was in warranty. Which I would guess is.

I had this happen a few weeks ago. No receipt neccessary. Ask them to send you the box though, I initially asked for the e-mail labels which never came and delayed the whole process by about 2 weeks. Annoying to say the least.

I sent my console out for repair last month, no problem with XBOX besides the fact that it was impossible to understand the customer service rep with the accent.
I sat on the phone repeating, "I cannot understand a single word you're saying, just tell me if my console has been shipped yet and please give me a tracking number". I gave up and hung up the phone, 2 days later I got a call from XBOX with all the info.
I ended up buying a PS3 recently but I absolutely hate the controller and NHL09 looks like garbage compared to the 360. Glad I got my XBOX back.

It would've been easier if I hadn't registered the console. Didn't realize until flip PM'd me.

Just so I'm clear, RROD is a hardware failure mainly due to heat, no? Anyone here use those intercoolers you clip to the back of the 360 that proivde extra cooling and still get the RROD?

Personally I would have the unit fail, then get it fixed properly while the warranty is still in place. The turn around time was really quick....

Ya don't bother - waste of money. I bought the intercooler and I still got the RROD after 1 week. Plus it makes the console even more noisier than it already is.

Intercoolers = Bad Idea. They consume to much of the power of the 360, so it doesn't operate at 100%, and some actually draw so much heat to them that they would burn the 360 itself. They are nosier, and they void your warranty if M$ thinks they were using one.

That's not true at all.
Though I do agree the intercoolers are mostly worthless, in theory it should be possible to make one that works well, in practice I don't think there is one.
