They still could roll to 11-1 and get a shot at the title.
Plus, shouldn't the title go to the best team? Not the team that is lucky enough to go undefeated or lucky enough to have their one loss at the right time as well as being "attractive" to the computers.
Without the BCS this would still be a huge upset because it would still be a number one team getting beat by an also ran. It would also mean that USC would have to play a tougher road in order to win the play-off.
Instead now we get whatever two teams are lucky enough to make it to the Championship game regardless of whether they deserve it or are the best two teams in the nation.

I did forget about Penn St. who could very easily win the Big Ten over OSU. I guess I am just use to Ohio St. doing enough in the Big Ten to win and get the opportunity to lose to a better team from another BCS conference. I hope it is Penn St. that gets the BCS bid this year I just don't have the confidence that they won't screw it up somehow allowing OSU to get in once again.
I would take a one loss USC team over any undefeated Big 12 team not named Oklahoma this year. Also, would take them over any one loss SEC team as well.
|
So you would take a one loss USC team over an undefeated Texas team who would have beaten OU, Texas Tech, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado and probably another win over Mizzou in the conference championship. Glad you don't decide championships... Hopefully the BCS voters would put an undefeated team with 3 top 10 victories on their resume into a championship.
You are obviously a USC fan. Sorry to inform they aren't as good as in past years. Sanchez just doesn't have it. I don't even understand why McKnight is the starter he has looked very unspectacular. I've watched all their games and they just don't have the dominant talent that they have had in the past besides a couple guys on the defensive side of the ball. They dominated a weak Ohio State team who has already given up on the season by putting their freshman qb in as starter.
The SEC is bar-none the toughest conference in college football like always although the Big 12 is inching closer. If you escape the SEC with only one loss it's an incredible feat. If you lose only one in the PAC-10 your team's status should plummet.

Perhaps I wasn't clear I would take them to win against any of the undefeated Big 12 teams other than Oklahoma. If one of the others went undefeated they certainly deserve to go to the Championship game over USC, based on the current system, but in my mind they wouldn't be as good of a choice to win the game as a one-loss USC team.

I am not a big USC fan. I like them better than the other big teams and think that they have consistently been the best team since 2002.
I think Sanchez will end up just fine and that the OC called a way too conservative game plan for most of the game. Once he was moving around in the second half you could see that he had a lot more options and could make a lot more plays.
Mcknight seems to try to do way too much in my view. Instead of just letting his talent get him 5-10 yards every play he tries to make 10 guys miss and get a 75 yard TD every play.
They looked pretty good in destroying two decent teams from BCS conferences. By the end of the year I would not be surprised if they are once again the team that nobody wants to play and that everyone in the hunt for the Championship will be happy that they crapped the bed again against a crappy PAC 10 school.

I agree that the SEC is the toughest conference but it is nowhere near the meat grinder people make it out to be. Every year supposedly top SEC teams get beat in bowls by teams from lesser conferences. The SEC certainly has a lot of top teams but they also get overrated by the pollesters much more than any other conference.

Another top 5 team drops a game they should have won as Florida loses 31-30 to Ole Miss.
With his early season play and this loss that probably kills Tebow's shot to repeat as the Heisman winner.

Man, U of Montana seems intent on doing things the hard way this year. Today, they let Division 2 Central Washington stay in the game by turning the ball over 5 times and eke out a 38-35 win IN Missoula. A last second 42 yard FG gave the Grizzlies the win.
You can't do that, even against a Div 2 school. Of course, things were compounded by the fact that CWU has Mike Reilly, he of Kalispell, MT, at QB and the kid is turning heads of NFL scouts.

Flathead high has another pretty good QB prospect heading to Arizona State this next fall to cloud up the QB picture there.

This kid gave up a ride to Gonzaga on a basketball scholarship to play football. It should be interesting to see how he does. Evidently, they haven't said no to the possibility of him playing basketball at ASU either.

Bama could be playing for a national championship, nothing would piss me off more considering how much I hate Saban.

yeah, if they win their tough games vs. LSU and Auburn, and the interesting games vs. Kentucky and this weeks giant killer Mississippi, they'll be there. that's a tough road no matter how good they are. will definitely be interesting.

The Harris poll is out this week for the first time this year. Only difference between it and AP in the top ten is flipping LSU and Alabama.
Also not too early to start looking at the computer rankings. Sagarin's is the only one I know of that's public so far. He's got them ranked:
1. Alabama
2. Utah
3. LSU
4. Boise
5. Oklahoma
6. USC
7. Vanderbilt
8. Georgia
9. Penn State
10. Virginia Tech
11. Texas
12. South Florida
13. Ohio State
14. Connecticut
15. Northwestern
16. BYU
17. Kentucky
18. TCU
19. Wisconsin
20. Texas Tech
Or maybe it is too early.

Everything following the script so far this week; only one upset so far, with Pittsburg beating South Florida. I'm looking forward to the USC - Oregon game today; lots of reason to think that this could be a potential upset, which would be the first time in ages that USC loses back-to-back games.

Big wins for the big guys, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, USC, etc. Alabama had almost all they could handle with Kentucky.
I think next week will clear up the National Championship picture a bit more. Big conference games led by Texas/Oklahoma and LSU/Florida.
If LSU can beat Florida in the Swamp, their schedule is pretty favorable the rest of the way out. The difficult games are at home after UF.
Oh yeah, and the Griz lost...woo hoo!!!

Just to be consistant....
U of Montana got throttled in Ogden yesterday 45-28. Weber State benefitted, IMO, from playing a tough non-conference schedule. They played at Hawaii early in the season and then gave ranked Utah a decent game last week.
Montana used to play a division 1 team every year but it's been quite some time. Instead, Bobby Hauck seems to adhere to the theory that beating up on division 2 teams is better preparation for Big Sky conference football. I beg to differ.
Not going to be a great year in Missoula this time around I'm afraid!

Weber state only gave Utah's third string a good game. Other then that the game wasn't a contest. Like the Harris poll above that has Utah ranked 2nd.

Yeah, I didn't watch and looked at the box after the post. Still, I think a team can learn more by playing tougher competition than they do by beating up on lower division schools.
Teams like Utah should be applauded for giveing Championship Division teams a shot at them.

Huge day of ball this Saturday with some great matchups.
Oklahoma/Texas in the Red River rivalry.....simply the biggest game of the year so far. OU smoked the horns last year 65-13 IIRC...so there is some revenge factor in this one as well. Whomever loses drops out of the NC talk for now as well.
FLA/LSU....another big SEC game that will also help determine the NC picture. Gotta cheer for FLA as much as it pains me...only because it helps USC stay in the NC mix.
OK St/Missouri. Trap game for the Tigers should they take it lightly...but that offense looks like something out of a video game.
NC/Notre Dame...man did i underestimate the Heels coming into this year...they are pretty good. Ranked top 25 for the 1st time in 7 years. That being said, they will have their hands full with ND who are also looking to crack the top 25.
As an aside....here is a terrific story about Longhorns QB Colt McCoy and his recently passed away cousin.
