Greetings and welcome to the official thread of LittleBigPlanet (releasing October 21). Why an official thread you ask? Personally I feel this will quite easily take "Game of the Year" honours, slaughtering all competition in its way. Let's get right down to it.
What is LittleBigPlanet?
LBP is a game for the PS3 developed by Media Molecule. Explaining it is a little tough if you haven't been following along. It is essentially a platformer driven by user created levels and content. Why I personally believe this game is so important and revolutionary is because it finally allows users with little computer knowledge to create and design a video game level.
The principle character is sackboy, a little man made of burlap. You will have the opportunity to develop your own sack-thing and take him or her through the levels.
The game will ship with a variety of levels designed by Media Molecule themselves, but the core of the game will be a system of user created levels, available online for free.
The imagination and creativity of the user will be what drives the game. Do you want to make a level where 4 friends must madly race through a level that requires the teamwork of everybody to complete? Perhaps a level that pits 4 friends against each other in a race to collect things and destroy each other? The possiblities seem limitless. This title truly is my grade 4 dream come true of wishing one day I could make a video game.
If you know nothing about LBP and would like to learn more without having to read my ramblings, I encourage you to take 8 minutes out of your day and watch this video from Media Molecule:
The official trailer can be viewed here:
The concept of the whole thing is a little odd. Interestingly, the creators themselves have been very clear that they have no clue as to how this game will evolve once released. The user can make many different types of games. Races, exploration, action and rhythm based timing games have all been created by people just screwing around.
Costumes, Rewards and the Eye
LBP gives players the opportunity to create costumes for their sack-person to stand out from the crowd.
The user can also create various devices using the tools given such as cars, skateboard or rocketships. Any device created and used in a level can be designated as a rewardable item. Beat my level in under 5 minutes and perhaps you can win the flames jersey that my sackboy will be wearing, which you can now use in your travels.
The game will make use of the playstation eye, a usb camera. with this you can create "stickers" to place on objects that can add realism or a touch of personality.
The Beta
Last week LBP began offering a beta version to select users around the world. The reaction has been incredibly impressive thus far. Already there are friends getting together, creating levels and running to internet forums to announce their creations to the world.
Today a video was released of a level that emulated tetris. Basically the level consists of one guy, a jetpack and a hell of a lot of pulleys:
So what are your thoughts on the game? Revolutionary? Destined for failure? What are your ideas for a level? I'm already developing an idea for a level in which Harvey the Hound hunts down MacT and tears out his tongue in revenge, so don't even try it.
This doesn't sound like any fun, more like work. I like my games like I like my movies and music, less thinking=better
I wonder if you, Dobbles and my wife are all the same person? Certainly not a game for everyone. There's no reason you couldn't just get the game and play the never ending stream of levels that will be created and released for free.

If there are pre existing levels, then I'd probably play. While I'm amazed at the game, I just don't have the patience to sit and build level after level. heck my girlfriend can't even make it through a create a character screen before getting impatient for the game
If you didn't want to you wouldn't have to build a thing. There will be a constant stream of levels being developed all the time. 98% will be absolute crap of course, but the voting system they have in place for levels should hopefully help the good 2% float to the top.

There'll be tons of included content included with the game, and the amount of generated content by the community will be large enough that you'll never have to build anything.
I don't forsee myself building many levels (unless I get a really unique game idea), but the editor would be fun to mess around with in existing levels.

But certainty is an absurd one.
I'm excited for the online level building to arrive. It apparently won't be available at launch but will come as a patch down the road. Pretty much allows you to build a level with your friends in it. I'm going to need some fellow cp'ers to offer insight for when I try to build the dome!
Well we have that thread on fantasticcontraption.com. I'm hooked on that game, but it can get old. I need something with a long term story or goal. I'm guessing it will be like fantastic contraption, just a lot better graphics?
(though this game better not cut into everyone fatas time!!!!)

Actually I was thinking this game might actually add to the cp fata experience. Whitetom and I were going to build a level that teaches people how to pass.

Stratton Whitaker teaching people to pass! I like where your going but I think that should be Igitangs job!
Edit:
As for Little Big Planet... I don't think it will be a day one purchase for me(see student), but I will definitely be buying it at some point. The level editor will never catch my attention, but I am sure we are going to end up with something like DotA in Warcraft, where a somebody creates an incredibly addictive map where people end up playing it for years to come. Starcraft Chrono Trigger(RPG) style. That would be fun as well...
