Default Calgary Board of Education supports the CPC ???

As much as I love politics, I still think there are certain groups who should remain non-partisan; school boards for example. Yet nearly everyday of this federal election I am getting the message that the Calgary Board of Education supports the Conservative Party of Canada.

Now they don’t have this information on their website; nor have I seen any mailers with their support. However; one of Calgary’s largest high schools has had one of Jim Prentice’s signs predominately displayed on school property for most of the campaign.

This is not some small sign that an over zealous campaign worker put up without thinking. It is a sign rented from Brite Signs, the type that require a vehicle to move. They also normally have to schedule a set up and take down time. And in this case I suspect they also required permission to enter the grounds to place the sign.

Realistically, I am pretty sure the agreement to place this sign on school property ended at the school level and the board is likely not even aware of it. You cannot see the name of the school in the photo, but it is James Fowler High School. It is on a prime corridor in this riding. A street; where on the opposite side, all parties suffer massive vandalism of signs. Yet this one is untouched.

A search of the school’s directory will show you a NJ Prentice. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. Too bad my son has graduated; I always meant to ask his Social Studies teacher if she was related to Jim.

I absolutely support politics being discussed at the high school level; I just don't think a school should openly support one party. Personally, I think the sign should be moved. We have room on our lawn, though not near as much traffic.

Editted @ 4:15 to add: I now have confirmation that NJ is related to Jim...

The only thing that might be news is they support the CPC. Teachers' unions across this country have always had a political leaning, usually NDP.

I agree, teachers, school boards, should be non partisan, but that is not the case a lot of the time.

what they teach should be non partisan but i don't see a problem with them supporting a particular party in an election if they were the best party for them in terms funding, policy issues, etc.

Talk about a title to stir up a discussion.

You even admit later in your article that it probably didn't even make it to the board.

Few thoughts...
- Most sports fields/parks, although part of the school ground, are not owned or maintained by the CBE.
- Maybe some punk kids moved the sign over that 2 foot high fence?
- Maybe CPC campaigners overstepped their boundaries.

You're making something out of nothing.

The title does have a question mark, because it does leave one to wonder.

Any one of the thousands of people who drive past it everyday could get that impression or at very least wonder about it. Few; like myself, realize he has a relative who works at the school.

And who decides that? The principal, the parents..... or the teacher who happens to be related to the local MP??

Well I'll definitely have to agree with HHH that your trying to make something out of nothing. YOu are right about the question marks but I still feel its a sweeping generalization with one very minor example.

And I really see nothing to confirm that its a relative...I just see it as someone who has the same last name.

BOOOOOOOOOOOO to you.

a) I don't see a problem with a school board endorsing a particular candidate or party. They should be endorsing who they feel will be most beneficial for education.

b) you have ABSOLUTELY no proof that the CBE actually endorses this candidate. Perhpas it is school/schoolboard policy to allow candidates room for signs and Jim is the only guy to ask thus far.

Bad thread title and again boo to you. I think this has blue square written all over it.

Your opinion, you are entitled to it.

Never claimed I did. Just pointing out that it gives the impression.

I called and a very helpful individual advised, apparently it normally is not allowed.

Um, ok... you do realize it is a blog of my personal opinion, not a news source...

If someone let's a sign affect how they vote, they need to think about what they are doing. Good thing those idiots are idiots.

High school students, on the majority, don't vote. And the ones who are old enough and will vote aren't the dumb ones, so I wouldn't worry.

I'd be more concerned over parts of the country that hate Alberta screwing us if their guy ever gets elected again.
