Default Getting my GED

Thought this might be the place to ask. I never finished high school unfortunately. It hasn't hampered me really. I've had a pretty decent career in various fields and for the last 12 years I've been running my own software company.

I am now looking at changing careers. I'll be working for another software company in the mean time, but I need to get my GED as I will be applying to the Edmonton Police Service as soon as I get it. I meet all the other requirements - even though I'm 41 they have told me, as I spoke with a recruiter the other day. It's something I always thought I would want to do and they have stated they would be happy to welcome me on board (of course there are a few tests I have to pass but that shouldn't be an issue) as soon as I get my GED.

Does anyone know where I can do this via correspondence and the quickest method in order to do so?

Any help would be appreciated.

I would look at Chinook College. They are the leader, typically, in adult education, so to speak. I know they do a lot of courses online as well, becuase I did 3 courses through them during highschool.

Thanks. I was kind of wondering if there is somewhere I can actually write an equivalency test online to get through the process a little quicker? I'm not sure though what the police service would accept knowing some of the equivalency test places that are available online. I would hate to have to sit through a year of online tests, etc. to get my GED at 41.

Are you missing a bunch of courses or is it simply one or two?

I was missing one course for about 15 years and just challenged that courses final exam this year and finally got my Diploma - much easier than doing a full GED, (in my case).

In the interests of further procrastination on my part, I looked this up...

Looks like it's a pretty simple process. A couple days of tests and you are good to go, assuming you pass them.

Chinook College does not offer a GED upgrade here in Calgary. The only place you can do it in our city is through Bow Valley College. The simplest way to do it is to pay for the exam and write it. I have helped some students in the past with preparing for this exam. Go to any book store and buy a GED prep book and see how well you do on that.

Make up some fake id, wear a mullet wig, go back to school for a year and try to be the coolest kid in class, while passing on valuable life lessons.

Toad is bad.

You forgot the most important part of all: change your name to Lando.

Lando Oilkiller, actually thats a pretty cool name in terms of a 40 year old going back to high school while spending his nights in his moms basement polishing his klingon costume.

Thanks. I'll look into this. I did several Google searches and didn't find this.

Thanks. Apparently the last class had two 45 year olds and a 46 year old so at least I won't be that out of place. I've gotten myself into really good shape, work out all the time and left weights, so I should have no issues with the physical part of the requirements.

Skipped right over your post. Sorry about that. Yes, it looks like RougeUnderoos came up with a similar option. I will have to get a prep book, study and write the exam. Seems to be the quickest method for sure.

No problem. I just searched "GED in Alberta" and got lots of hits.

I did this a long time ago.
I just went and wrote it and passed.
It wasn't that hard, but maybe it has changed by now.

Yeah...you see, that's why I need to get my GED and you don't...

Just ordered The Complete Canadian GED Preparation Book from Amazon.ca as noted on that page you referenced. Oh won't this be fun.

Just for reference, my brother went to about 2 months of High School, then at about 23 or so he did his GED through a work sponsored program and got honor roll type marks, and 100% on his Social Studies portion.

Real life teaches you alot more than you think, then only thing that might be tough is the math.

Thanks Rathji. Makes me feel better. I did one semester of high school, that's it. Strange enough like I said, it really hasn't hurt me at all. Things are much different for the younger generation now though.

even the math wasn't bad, more just common sense stuff, like,
If you have a 10 foot ladder, and move the base 4 feet from the wall, will it be 4, 8, 12 feet high on the wall?

Pretty sure it was multiple choice, when I did it, and that was the kind of questions on it.

edit - actually check this out
