I was thinking last night...don't the Chiefs look stupid now for passing over Rodgers in that draft when they had a 35 year old Trent Green and knew they would need another QB one day in the near future. I don't think theres a team in the NFL in worse shape at the QB position than the Chiefs are right now.

I wonder if those picks were switched, what would have happened?
Would Rodgers be as good if he had been played immediately? Would Smith look like a rising star if he had tutored behind Favre for 3 years then started behind that wonderful O-Line that GB has?
It has been said that QBs get too much credit when the do well and not enough when they fail. I personally think that the O-Line has a huge bearing on the success of an offense, and rarely is it acknowledged.

I would tend to agree with you. If the Packers put Rodgers in that first year and let him get beat up behind that offensive line does he turn out the way he did today? It's not very often that a high draft pick comes in and starts at that position from day one of his career and goes on to become a superstar. Elway and Peyton Manning are two that I can think of, other than that Drew Bledsoe had a good career as a number one pick who started from day one...but who else, I'm sure there are others, but I can think of a lot of top 5 picks who didn't go on to do much starting from day one at that position.
It is a position where the player needs a lot of support from his team mates. The Packers were smart to jump on a succession plan for Brett Farve when they picked him though. It is too easy to say...well we have Brett Farve we don't need another QB. But it was a good chance to get a talented player who was a great value pick in the draft and groom him under a hall of famer for a few seasons before letting him have the team.

I think David Carr would agree with you. Carr likely had his career ruined because the Texans O-line was so pathetic that they gave him absolutely no time. When you are trying to transition from the speed of college to NFL (which I'm told is infinitely faster) and you are getting sacked 8 times a game, it's hard to develop. Sure he has been criticized for holding on too long but he never really had a chance behind that line.

True. But thats what happens when your top four WR's are out and a fifth gets injured yesterday. Hass has had an awful start, but he's proved in the past what he's capable of. He's miles ahead of Tarvaris Jackson.

Thank you Brandon Marshall!! 31.6 fantasy points out of him yesterday, and the ONLY REASON why I will most likely be posting my first win after tonight.

Sure his numbers are bad...but I put almost none of that on his peformance, but almost all of it on what he has to work with...as sainters7 points out. He is a good NFL QB as shown by his past, but when there is precious little to throw too, no one will succeed. Same thing with Favre 3 years ago and why everyone was clamoring for him to quit. Clearly he was still among the best in the game when he had people to throw to just a year later and even more so last year. On top of that he had a patchwork O line "protecting" him. Hasselback has time but again...no one to throw at.
Minnesota is a very good example the other way...they have players, but Jackson isnt at the NFL level yet, either decision wise or execution wise, and it shows in the play calling by Childress and company. Put a Manning or Favre or even someone like Jon Kitna on that club and they are a force.

That QB carousel Herm had going yesterday was embarrassing. Huard, then some guy off the practice squad nobody had ever heard of, then Huard, then Thigpin. Then after the TV commentators wonder aloud why Herm would go with Thigpin who had never worked with the first unit offense instead of Huard for 2.5 quarters, the Chiefs inform CBS that Huard was injured in the first quarter. This is going to be a long season. I think your right Sylvanfan, the Chiefs could very well go 0-16 this season. They might be able to handle the Dolphins in December. That could be the game that decides who gets the first overall pick next April. At least us Chiefs fans have something to look forward to.

I guess my rebuttal to that would be that....
The Chiefs claimed Thigpen off the Vikings Practice squad to be their 3rd string QB and he ended up playing most of the game yesterday!
Of course it's not fair to just blame the QB, the team has a very poor offensive line which has given them no running game to speak of. Plus their play book is about as sophisticated as most US highschool teams these days too.
Yeah, burn...it's going to be a long year. those 4 wins for the state of Missouri that Tranny mentioned...was he counting the pre-season wins?

I was thinking that the Rams would get three of them. I wonder how long Clark Hunt will put up with it? Born into money, probably doesn't really care. Might even be scared of Carl.

It just shows how bush league the NFL is. I can't wait until the next CFL game so I can watch some real football.

hilarious. ya to get back to that sophisticated well run league with all those experienced and skilled football refs who clearly played football when they were younger.
With an onfield product that has enoumous amounts of skill with deep playbooks, and reasonable knowledgable fans who know that you really really should make a ton of noise when your own team has the ball.
Good ole CFL.
Seriously, wanting to watch the CFL because you are complaining about NFL referees is about the most ironic thing a sportsfan could say.

Sainters any updates on all the corners who were or have been hurt? Doesn't look like they have any left.

McKenzie, Gay, Porter, and Glenn(ie. the Saints top 4 CB's). Not to mention we have 4 DT's injured, so Payton signed Alvin McKinley to start with Ellis, and then McKinley injured his foot in his first practice, and is now out. Also, starting OLB Scott Fujita and starting SS Roman Harper are out as well. The Saints D is decimated, to say the least. Five defensive starters were out yesterday, unbelieveable.
Though as for the CB's, Porter came back in and played the rest of the game so he seems to be fine, and Gay should be good to go for next week as well. Also, McKenzie may play as well(and Fujita and Harper should be go's also). Which is really good news, as the Saints are going to need all the help they can get against Denver next week.

The thing is he is one of the better refs the NFL has....sad to see him get bumped down like this. But on the other hand, it's great to see refs being held accountable for their mistakes.
