AFI.. Thursday is about as emo as Alkaline Trio would be in that case.. If you ever listen to the lyrics of a Thursday song they're definately not emo..

Autobiography of a Nation -

We have burned their villages and all the people in them died
We adopt their customs and everything they say we steal
All the dreams they had we kill
Still we all sleep sound tonight
Is this what you wanted to hear?
We erased all their images and dance
And replaced them with borders and flags

At the top of this timeline you'll remember
This is the lipstick on the collar
And in my own life I've seen it in the mirror
sometimes at the cost of others hopes

So write these words back down inside
That's where you need it the most
and without conviction of heart you will never feel it at all
Yeah, we all dance to the same beat when we we're marching
Yeah, the TV tells us everythign we need to know
And this scene is painting in all the fashions of the moment
And history is all the same

Everything you say you stole
Every dream you dream you bought

The songs of Thursday are no more emo than any other song about anyone else. Hell you can find rap songs that are about losing love and such, but that's not emo..

I saw Herbalizer a few years back in Vancouver at the Commodore as part of the Jazz Festival.

Pretty good show. Not totally my kind of music, but I had a good time for sure.

Emo is like a post-punk, emotionally driven form of pop music. Some of it it is influenced by folk as well as metal. It can range from being accoustical or electric. Lyrics are usually meant to tell stories of defeat, sadness, despair, humility, and recovering from it. Not unlike a lot of country music, but for some reason, emo get a lot more bashers I think.

Back in my day (well, I'm not THAT old...), "emo" referred more to the angst driven indie groups like Fugazi, Husker Du, and Nation of Ulyses, as well as screaming metal groups. Today the term has somewhat changed meaning though, and now there is "screamo" and "emo".

At least that is what I gathered from reading about it. It's all a bunch of bs if you ask me. Music groups should be judged independent of genre IMO.

Can someone tell me who sings the song that contains these lyrics...

Clinically he was dead
but the motor inside his head was still running
so they plugged him into a machine
and let his brain dream

That's all I got. Google search doesn't work.

You rule!

Man, I gotta stop smoking so much rock. I have that song on my computer already but I don't remember where I got it and the guy's name doesn't even ring a bell.

I agree. Everyone's definition of what is emo is different anyways. Just from what I've heard whenever I hear a nasaly whiney voice, with slow odd timed music I think emo. I say I hate that type of music, but there are bands here and there that fit into that category.

I try and judge music independent of category, I've given some of the bands I've mentioned in previous posts a chance, but I despise it. I have been told many times that thursday is a heavy band, but I just never see it, I've downloaded songs by them about 4 or 5 times now, and end up hating it everytime.

Kermitology, like I said above, when I hear a certain sound its just what I think, its such a broad expanding category these days.

Another band I've been listening to is Kamelot, their new album the black halo, its a pretty damn good album. I get an Iron Maiden feel out of them without the galloping guitars. Try and find the songs soul society, the haunting, and when the lights are down. Kind of cheesy at times I guess but I grew up on metal and I'm liking it, its kind of different.

Some new bands I've recently stumbled upon:

Boy
Motion Soundtrack
Stereophonics
Whitfield
Athlete
Thirteen Senses

Actually, I used to really be into hip hop, r&b, rap, but I never knew you could just totally drop one type of music and start following a new type of music altogether in the course of one day like I did a couple months ago..

I went from listening to 50, Nas, etc. to now listening to Colplay, Interpol, Athlete, Oasis, Keane, the Perishers, Arcade Fire and alot more of the like.
Stereophonics are great! They've been around a while, suprised that you haven't heard of them before.....what album got you listening to them?

I think that I might go to see them here in Vancouver on the 24th.

I mentioned Bad Astronaut, and just found out today that the drummer and former drummer of Lagwagon Derrick Plourde shot himself on March 30th..

Some great stuff on Ninja tunes. I'm a huge Amon Tobin fan, and Kid Koala and DJ Vadim are some of my other favorites. I'm not a tremendous electronica fan, but I've consistently enjoyed the stuff coming from Ninja tunes.

Stereophonics are great, I'm another one who would agree with that.

Stars is good too.

Has anyone heard the new Coldplay or Foo Fighters singles?

Coldplay reminds me too much of Clocks. I really dig the new Foo though. I'm not sure if it sounds like it should be a single but I think it's a cool track.

Forgot to mention:

Old Time Relijun

A good band if you like bizarre music. Somewhat punk and grunge, but pretty hard to describe.

The Make-up

Sort of 60s-ish and 70s-ish garage surfer, grunge, funk. Former singer of Nation of Ulysses.

If there are any old Headstones fans still around check out Hugh Dillon's new band..
The Hugh Dillon Redemption choir. I think the cd is pretty good. Not as heavy as the old Headstones stuff...but still pretty rockin'
I've always been a fan of his lyrics.
