It is excellent. Be careful which ipod you buy as not all work. I have the (now) old nano. Also, the shoe transmitter works for any shoe. You just buy a little pocket that goes on your laces. Easily googleable.

An example: http://grantwoodtechnology.com/shoepouch/

I would also recomend that you follow the calibration instructions as they can sometimes not be accurate out of the box.

For $40 it is an absolute steal.

I'm pretty sure it won't work for shuffles. Just the last two versions of the nano, itouch and iphone.

Apparently it only works with the new touch. It won't work with an old touch running new software. It also will not work with the iPhone, even after the 2.1 update.

It's a hardware thing.

If true, that is pretty weak.

What hardware does the touch have that the Phone doesn't?

The Nike hardware.

Can't you still buy the external device?

That I'm not sure about. I can see being able to buy the Nike device, and then download the Nike app from the App Store...

But I haven't seen or read anything other than it's just not supported at all. There were some comments about a scene dev getting the Nike app up on Cydia (jailbroken "app store"), but that's just supposition for now.

What hardware is that? It's not like they've developed a completely new wireless technology for Nike+ that's only in the iPod Touch.

Read a blurb on Engadget today, someone took apart a new Touch and found a Bluetooth/WiFi module evidently used for the Nike+. The iPhone has Bluetooth and WiFi, so my question remains. I'm likely not gonna buy it at any point, but I am still curious.

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA...UwMDU#overview

It is compatible with all Nanos.

There will be a version that is for the iPhone. The touch does not have a constant connection to the Internet so the app will be able to do much more than the Nano/touch version.

Right. So you plug the receiver into your nano and it communicates with the part in your shoe. Now, with the new iPod Touch, you no longer need the receiver, it is built into the iPod Touch.

Now, as far as I know, the iPhone has every bit of communication technology (and more) that the iPod Touch has (including Bluetooth/WiFi, which is apparently the method of communication used by the Nike+) so I'm still wondering how a "hardware thing" could be why the iPhone is not currently supported.

More likely, it will be supported once the 2.1 Firmware update is out. (and an Nike+ app is available)

Sorry, let me backtrack as I was confused and am probably confusing everyone else.

All Nanos: hardware and software.
2nd gen Touch: software only
1st gen Touch: no support
All Classics: no support
iPhone: coming, don't know if it will require only software or h&s

There's something more to this than simply having bluetooth/wifi. Why wouldn't the first gen Touch work with the add on device? There's something in the new touch that the 1st gen touch and iPhones do not have. Probably a proprietary wifi chipset.

It can be fixed in firmware but not 2.1. They would have said so if it was. There is nothing that I know of in the SDK that allows for applications to access the dock connector. They will need to be very careful as to what types of devices can connect and what applications can do so it will take some time.

I have no clue what the specifics are. All I know is that it has they specifically stated it will not (currently) work with either the iPhone or the original touch.

Some good points. I found this edit from the same Engadget post I cited earlier:

"Nike+iPod has been called a "proprietary 802.11 protocol" in the past"

With the introduction of the 2nd generation iPod Touch, Apple revealed that Nike+iPod was built-in. As a result, new iPod Touch owners need only to buy the shoe transmitter in order to use the running-aide.

Unfortunately, existing iPod Touch owners and iPhone owners will be unable to use the new software due to a lack of the proper receiver. Nike+ uses a "proprietary low-power 2.4 GHz radio" and the existing dock-attachment is not compatible with the iPhone:

Owners of the first-gen iPod touch, the iPhone and iPhone 3G are locked out, because of the technology required to connect the device to the receiver in your shoe without using the standard dock connector dongle. Apple also said that even if you shove in the dongle to the unsupported devices, nothing will happen
We would hope that Apple would release a version compatible with the iPhone, but there has been no suggestion that they will.

Nike+iPod is a system that allows runners to track their running process through the use of a special in shoe sensor.

The difference is that to include the receiver in the phone, you have to go through all of the FCC/CRTC/whatever-its-called-in-your-country certifications all over again. Apple released the 3G iPhone only a little while ago, they aren't going to go through that again when they can just sell you another $150 Nano to get the job done.

The Nike+ wireless is just different enough that you can't tweak an existing bluetooth or wifi firmware to make it work. It's closer to an RFID tag than either of these wireless technologies.
