My pet peeve is the opposite--you go out with either a couple of buddies, or a couple of couples, and one person orders the full load and booze, while you get a water and something cheap (because you are broke), and then at the end they want to split it evenly. Get bent--you pay for what you wanted, I'll pay for what I got. I definitely won't short it, but I don't want to subsidize your meal, especially back when I was broke and that was the reason I wasn't ordering everything on the menu.
Of course I have my good group of friends that we all pay for each other at times and know it will even out, as well my financial situation is very different so that it isn't as critical, but I see no reason for people not to just figure out what they owe and put in a fair amount.
Now the people that end up not putting in enough, that's another rant altogether......

I do that. I tip what I would normally tip with bills, and then leave nickels dimes, quarters, loonies, whatever happens to be in my pocket (no pennies though).
I was told once that waiters don't care, they just go to the till, empty out the change and take a bill. I'd think if everyone did that it would add up pretty fast!

Ha! Just wanted to comment on your avatar. Met some Calgary people who came down when the Flames played the Cats here last season. The one guy's biggest complaint was that he couldn't get Jack Daniels at the BAC,only Crown Royal. He was pretty toasted and kept yelling"what? this is America? " Awesome.

Do not confront your friends on money. I did one time and missed a sweet hootie and the blowfish concert.

This is what I went through the last year or two. I am the youngest of all my buddies out here and was the only one left in school at the time. My brother and one other guy in particular would ask me to go out for dinner/drinks/hockey games, generally knowing beforehand that I couldnt afford it. It would always be a free ticket, or paying extra on the tab, or buying a bigger case of beer. As the broke guy, it was awkward, but they knew what they were getting into. One of them would also tell me that 'guys did it for me when I was a broke student, too'. Now that I am working and steady paychecks start rolling in, I figure I can make it up to them over time. But the 'guys did it for me' comment also just tells you when you run into a friend one day and the positions are reversed not to forget it.

Well, your friends are being unreasonable in that situation. If I go out somewhere and decide that night that I want to order a few glasses of the most expensive scotch they have, plus an appetizer, and a dish $30 more expensive than anyone elses, then I'm obviously expecting to pay for what I ordered.
If on the other hand you're out with 2 or 3 people and you all have, for example, one normal dish and a beer, plus split an appetizer, then I think it only makes sense to just divide the bill evenly. In this situation I think putting on your reading glasses and busting out the fine-tooth comb to look over the bill is a little ridiculous, and makes you look cheap.

Ha, I was wondering this after reading the initial post.
Is it really that insulting if the nickles and dimes are above and beyond a reasonable tip?

You shouldnt have to confront your friends on money. If it turns into a confrontation, its not a real friendship.

He was out of line, but I would just forget about it. Not worth it unless he really becomes a pain in the ass.
Cheapskates suck. Going out with friends only to have them complain about the cost of everything "This beer cost me FIVE DOLLARS". Wow. It's a bar.
None of my friends are too bad though.
How about tipping? I think it's pretty rude to tip the server so it makes your bill even (ie 12.12 bill, then leave a 1.88 tip so the bill comes out to 14), but a bunch of my friends do that. Not with cash but with credit card/debit card.

Yup. It was hilarious. We spent both breaks talking to them. They were good spokespeople for Calgary --they had me ready to go up for the Stampede. Sure hope he got his JD somewhere!

I think problem number one with splitting a bill is that no one can add on tax and tip. So if your meal is $18 people will throw in 20 and feel good about themselves. I don;t know if it is intentional or people are just stupid.
On the other hand I don't like the overtipper or the guy that trys to make up for the tip. If I felt the service was bad I should be allowed to tip 5% to cover the waiter/waitresses tip out and no one should be trying to make it up for me. If I think the service is good and overtip everyone else should tip the amoung they were going to anyways.

You would think that would be something that would be discussed when you're all sitting at the table, no?

Well this topic sure does hit close to home for me.
I'm what some would call the "planner" in my group of friends, I plan the yearly trip to the mountains, I plan the rec leagues, and so on and so forth.
Obviously everything goes down on the credit card and then I get paid back eventually. Thankfully my group of friends are not cheap, but there have still been times when I take the hit for unpaid bills. But once people start to get nitpicky with me, that's when I gotta draw the line....
I've lost friends over money, and I think that's a pretty stupid reason to not talk to someone. But when you ask them to grab a group of their close friends Wendy's, and he hands you individual receipts....you KNOW something is wrong.
Long story short, it'll come back to you in the end, and it'll bite your buddy in the ass too.

I think you need new friends man, they don't call or text and they don't pay you back.
