I don't know how they measure this stuff, but Calgary does have a good culture scene.

- We have a tremendous variety of theatres, from small independent groups to more substantial companies like Theatre Calgary and Vertigo
- We have our CPO
- We have an active Opera company, and Ballet
- We have numerous art galleries and of course the Museum

Just a small sampling - people like to blast Calgary's lack of culture, but it's there.

- We have numerous live music venues/pubs supporting local independant music such as Morgans, Snatch, The Blind Beggar, The Ironwood, Mikey's Juke Joint, Sals, The Ship, Kits on 16th, and...well, come to think of it TONNES more and I have other things to post about. But even compared to a few years ago, Calgary can now officially say it has a bonafide independant music & live music scene. Not DJs everything.

- We have venues to support fringe art, and not anything that involves urine there CC, but one time I saw a girl perform japanese rope bondage on another girl while reciting poetry to ambient trance among other things. And this wasn't even a kink event. Actually it was a performing arts variety show my girlfriend put together.

- The finest public outdoor skateboarding facility I have ever seen.

- Tyrell Musem 2 hrs away.

- A provincial park inside the city, two if Nose Hill counts.

- Zoo.

- Science Centre.

- A multitude of post-secondary and continuing education resources.

In a city of now over a million people, the "artsies" are inevitably going to come out of the crowds and begin to change things. Its been in swing for a while, but only in the past few years has it really gotten better, in my opinion.

Better known for its raucous stampede than its theaters and museums, Calgary often finds its culture disparaged by other Canadians. Yet Calgarians, it turns out, are the most cultured people in the country. When you combine the percentage of households who spend money to attend museums with those who spend to attend the live performing arts, Calgary comes out on top, while Toronto and Montreal both languish way down the list.

Ottawa was found to be the smartest, and Calgary 2nd smartest; strange considering Rob Anders spends time in both cities.
Err... Maybe I'm one of the people bringing our overall score down, but it looks to me like we're the third smartest city - not the second.

I would take this survey with a grain of salt. From my understanding, they factor in the average amount spent on electronics for media purposes as well for this survey amongst other things. I am curious to see what their actual criteria was for this poll. I mean Calgary is not as bad culturally as some may like to point out. It used to be horrible, but in recent years, has improved alot. But, to say it is number one in the country is stretching it alot.

The smartness, I can see it though, due to the high percentage of those with degrees in the city.

I believe Troutman is a lawyer. Math is not their forte.

Yeah, didnt someone have a list of the greatest places to live in Canada a while back, and had obscure criteria such as number of casinos and amount of new cars on the roads?

Ottawa and Victoria are tied for 1st. Calgary is one point behind. Call it third if you want, but you can't be any closer to first.
