Do you know how much money the government loses out on because they're too busy sucking america's ****? Chretien was guilty of it, so was Martin, so is Harper. Making legal, regulating and taxing marijuana is as close to a cure-all as there is in this country at this time.
And ya, decrease funding to the military for sure. They do absolutely nothing for Canada.

You know, I'm in favour of legalized and taxed pot as much as the next guy, but the revenues gained from it won't be that great. How much government income is raised through alcohol and tabocco taxes? A tax on marijuana will only bring in a small fraction of that figure.

They'd run the country just as well as any other party, which is to say, with lots of stupidity. The only difference is, they wouldn't pretend they're smart.

Again. GST on prostitution. That's how you raise government income.

I don't know why but for some reason when ever someone brings up legalizing marijuana as an election issue I feel they immediately lose all credibility...
That was cool in High School to joke about but let's be serious there are a lot of other more pressing issues that face Canadians than a few pot smokers and their would be tax income.

If the basis of the NDP doing well in power is legalizing pot, that's simply not good enough - because it would never happen anyways. It's not a practical suggestion...which isn't to say it is completely without merit - but this country is not ready for something that dramatic.

Again, no, prostitution should be subsidized, or at least a taxable benefit

Not too mention there are a lot of libertarians with the CONSERVATIVE PARTY who are ambivalent or favourable to this issue. The NDP is NOT the party of personal freedoms, it is the party of greater state control.

I'm predicting a Liberal/NDP coalition.
No matter what, it won't be a single party majority.

I agree 100%, I don't think that the general population of Canada has ever called upon the military to help with issues such as forest fires, floods, ice storms and the like... Defending the northern territories? Plus I don't know helping to ensure your freedom to make such outlandish statements in the first place.
The liberal government plundered the military for years which resulted in the armed forces being a joke even to those in the army.... hell I have heard stories about soldiers having to do fundraising at malls... for a developed nation that is unexcusable. The Liberal government's horrible policies put troops on the ground in Afghanistan when they weren't prepared to be in the country in terms of equipment.... something that Canada is still playing catchup for and likely will be for decades to come.

I don't think that our system allows coalition governments, and its unlikely that the NDP would be co-operative under that kind of format. Frankly the government would fall within a week.

The military was called in for the 1997 Red River Flood. I don't know if that was called on by the general public, but it was greatly appreciated by them I'm sure.
edit: Nevermind, I can see that you were being sarcastic.

Sure it does. I can't see any reason why you couldn't throw together a coalition to govern?

Tradition, mostly. I think in this case, a Conservative minority out of this election would remain the government unless defeated in a confidence motion. At that point, the government could either resign, handing power to the opposition, or request a new election. If it happened right after the last election, the GG might refuse a new election and hand power to the opposition anyway.
Formal coalitions really do not exist in Canada.

Nope, no idea. Enlighten me.
Whatever number you calculate I see that number and raise you: Gravy training off the US for our own defense. Canada knows full well it doesn't have to spend anything on defenses because of that country that we are sucking the **** of.

Just so we're clear.... you're saying it's okay to suck **** as long as you get something in exchange?
(Are we really having this conversation?)
As for my vote (if I get my ballot in time) I really don't know what I'll do. Historically I've voted Liberal, but I'm not going to lie: I'm not enthusiastic about a change in the government right now. I disagree with Harper on a lot of things, but he has been something that the Liberals haven't been for a while: competent. I've been grudgingly impressed.
A lot depends on who my candidates are, but one great thing about Canadian politics is that when a party screws up they get to sit in the penalty box for a while. For my money, the Liberals could stand to stay in the box for at least one more election cycle, so long as Harper is doing a decent job.
