Default Fire Training Schools

Hey im fresh out of high school and i will be upgrading at mount royal this year for a semester and then im looking to go to school somewhere for fire training as i am looking to become a fire fighter. IIRC, most firefighters need to be at least an EMR (emergency medical responder) or EMT-A, especially if you want to work with the city.

SAIT offers these courses. Make sure you go to a school that's accredited with the ACP.

As for fire training... no idea.

Well, I know nothing about BC and very little about Alta. I'm sure there's someone else who can help better. Sorry.

Otherwise, best of luck.

The job sounds great. Hang out in your bunk, get a call, EMS will tell you you're not needed, but you'll go anyway to pad your stats so your department gets more $$$, you'll go back to sleep.

I've heard from veteran fire fighters in both Alberta and Ontario that Vermillion is your best option for schooling

Vermiilion is the best.A trade would certainly be an asset too.
Any volunteer work will help.
Most departments have polygraphs too so keep your nose clean young fella.

Good luck, the CFD will be hiring a ton of guys in the next few years.

I'm not sure why you put it in the green text...its pretty much the truth...Chummer can confirm that

But on topic, as said, vermillion is your best choice close to home but also I know a few firefighters with CFD and in some BC departments that have went to Kilgore Fire College in Texas and have nothing but good things to say about it.

Yup he pretty much nailed it.He forgot to say though that before we hang out in our bunks we like to take the truck to the store(at taxpayer's expense)so we can stuff our faces.Eat till we're tired, sleep till we're hungary....ahh the life of a fireman

Being an active fulltime firefighter for 4 years the advice i can give you would be to get your EMR certification. Figure out where you want to work first before paying 10000 for a fire school. Calgary fire does not require your NFPA 1001(ff cert from fire school) to apply. You do have to pass a stupid polygraph though. Same goes for Edmonton fire minus the polygraph. Both those cities are hiring huge numbers in the next few years so my advice would be apply.
It doesnt hurt to volunteer somewhere as well, alot of those departments will get you alot of the courses you need.
Bottom line is that the fire school does not guarantee you a job and could prove to be a waste of money if you get hired in edm or calgary as they train you again to what they want.

If you are interested in schools
there is JIBC in cranbrook, lakeland in vermillion, and Emergency services academy in sherwood park.

thanks for the info! I was talking to one of the fire fighters at a convention once, and they were saying if you get your fire training certificate, it puts you ahead of everyone else that is applying to be a fire fighter as you would already know what to expect when they train you. Plus they said there is room for error in school, so you can learn from your mistakes. They also told me getting my fire training certificate allows me to apply basically anywhere rather then going through the training over again if i were to move to a different city.
