2008 US Open
Only a day in and there have been some great matches so far....
I'm surprised Blake pulled that one, because he really looked down and out at some points. He does seem to thrive on that center court. The J-Block must help. I'd definitely like to see more of Young. Although the depth of US tennis doesn't seem great, Young should move up in the rankings as the likes of Fish, Ginepri, and perhaps even Blake, begin to fade...
It'll be interesting to see how the Nadal reacts. I thought he'd walk all over his first opponent, but he's played a lot in last few months. He has definitely improved on this surface though.
Not sure what to expect from Federer. He always does well at Flushing Meadows, but he's been struggling. It's hard to say.
My stab in the dark winner picks -
Men: Murray
Women: Dementieva

Yeah I watched a bit of that Blake match and after the first set I moved on because he looked like he was gonna smoke the kid. Then I happen to flip by it again and Young is way ahead in the 5th set...(2-0 30-0 IIRC) so I think OK now it IS over...watch Michelle speak...go back and there they are tied at 4. Wild stuff.

I think Federer...quite simply put...is burnt out. Once he gets past this tourney he should just go shut it down for about 3 months and then start again a few weeks before the Australian. To be the very best at that sport for 5 years straight HAS to take a toll.
As for winners...I always hope for an American to get to the final in the mens...just been to many good matches in years past when that happens.
Women? Is it wrong to want Sharapova and her ONLY forever?

I think Dorkovic has a good chance (man I hate him). Ivanovic from the women's side.

Burn out is definitely the best way to put it. I certainly think it is hard to be focused all the time after 5 years.

I do wish Sharapova was playing. She's one of my favorites.
I think Roddick is a loose canon and splitting with Connors was a huge mistake. At the same time, I don't feel Blake can is strong enough to win 5 setters. I'm surprised he pulled that one out today. Isn't his record something like 4-11 when it comes to 5 setters? Of course, one or both of them could surprise us all.

I'm rooting for Blake and Roddick. I'm still waiting for these guys to show that their talent isn't going to waste. Well, at least Roddick has proved something, but Blake has disappointed me time and time again. We'll see. I'm also hoping that Monfils, one of the most fun players to watch, can make some waves.
As for the women's side, I don't see Ivanovic coming out of this one the winner. If Serena doesn't get it done, I think Jankovic will win.

wasn't there somthing earlier in the year about Federer having mono..
That certainly could a lot to do with why he has been off his game most of the year.

I watch until Ivonich (sp?) gets booted from the tourny. She is just so damn cute!

Brutal play from Ivanovic today. Her rust was really showing.

They're calling it the biggest upset ever at the Us Open. Her opponent Julie Coin is ranked #188.

I heard some blurb about it. Was she that bad as they stated?

Oh yeah. Easily the worst I've ever seen her play and I've followed her career for awhile. Now, I don't want to take anything away from Coin. She took advantage of a rusty opponent, so good on her.

I knew Ana would blow it, but I didn't think it'd be this early. Gah.

Roddick's looking good against Seppi so far.... so we'll see how he goes.
As for Blake, man he kills me. He's probably my favorite player on tour and he just can't seem to get it altogether. Fish is a tough player, but he should have taken him out. I just hope he gets it together one day.
I still think we see a Rafa vs. Djokovic final, but im really hoping that Federer can make some noise.

Heads up....the match right now between Querrey and Nadal has become a beauty. It's tied up at a set each, with Querrey breaking Nadal a couple times in the second set!
