So I don't even know if I can explain this right so anyone will understand, but i will try.

If I have a website let's say www.calgarypuck.com, how do I make a secondary website like something.calgarypuck.com?

If I am asking do you think I am getting way over my head? lol

I just can't seem to find the answer by searching anywhere.

Thanks!

That's called a subdomain.. basically you have an DNS entry for that subdomain, and it will either point to a different server or point to the same server if you've got your web server configured appropriately.

Thank you!

Also what is a good web hosting service for a webmaster/forum thing?

I am trying to help a friend but I have been out of the design game way too long!

edit: He doesn't know if he will have a forum but he wants to find a place that can support it. Thanks again!

My favourite host for websites is mediatemple.com. The downside with them is their inability to host .ca domains.

I currently use http://www.cirtexhosting.com/ and they've been reasonably good.. a few hiccups but nothing significant, and they do respond to trouble tickets quickly, though some of their support staff is pretty dumb.

Dreamhost is also decent.

It also depends on the amount of traffic you are expecting and what your site requirements are. www.webhostingtalk.com is a good site for discussing and researching web hosts.

I've used Dreamhost for the past 2-3 years for many sites, some with relatively high traffic levels, and agree. Even though they're often lumped in with other 'bargain' hosting (which in most cases means terrible service and even worse offerings), I've been pleased with the scope of options they provide -- everything from one-click installs if you don't want to get your hands dirty, to some more advanced server-side management if you're into that kind of thing. And their communication and customer support is quite good too -- they've had some hiccups, but seem to come back stronger each time. I wouldn't use it for mission-critical sites, but I'm comfortable enough with them that I run my freelancing business off their services.

The only problem I ever had with dreamhost was with email.. my websites never went down but I went through a span where email was down significant amounts for a few weeks, and then I decided to just change hosts. In hindsight I probably could have asked to be moved to a different server.

But other than that I agree out of the overselling bulk hosts Dreamhost has a pretty good reputation.
