And right there is a perfect example of why it would have been better off coughing up a 5th round pick (I mean, it's a 5th! Who cares?!) and signing him as an RFA. Yeah well, the Devils had cap to spare so no big trouble for them.

Why would it have been better to cough up a 5th round pick? He got him for free

Because he could've saved $250k or more, signed him for 1 or 2 years and had a much cheaper AHL %...just to name a few reasons.

That was his choice on the offer. He could have offered $500 000 and got him for all we know

Yeah, for sure there's that chance if he's a UFA, he could've got an even better deal than if he was an RFA, but there's also a chance that he loses out on him to a bigger bid which is exactly why he bid what he did. All I'm saying, is all that risk not worth a 5th? A 5th holds no value whatsoever in a trade, so I'm surprised someone bid that much instead of giving up a 5th to make sure.

Well really a million bucks ain't that bad. Fills a hole on his team and gives him some depth. It's certainly not an albatross of a contact that he'll regret down the road.
Not sure if the RFA commitee would have accepted less than 1 million anyways. At best he might have saved 100K or so.

No way the RFA panel would allow a pay cut that big. I think 25% is the largest pay cut that has been allowed this year for a player with a rating of 70 or better. In this case it's like 60%. In the NHL if you want to cut a guys wage the team loses his rights as a RFA an the player becomes UFA. We sort of hold the same phillosophy here....if you want a pay cut of more than 25% on a player and aren't prepared to at least match the old AHL wage for a guy with an AHL rating...cut him loose, or pay up. Those are your two options. NHL teams don't get to have their cake and eat it too, neither will you!

I feel OK about a million bucks, especially with a 2W deal. If he ends up completely pooping the bed or running back to Europe I can just demote him and then release him from there. Sure, I could have saved ~ 0.50 million on his salary but I have the room and now I also have a large number of defensemen around that range. Yay!

Mezei signed in Kazakhstan, he won't be in the NHL this year. That's why I was surprised to see a 3yr deal.

Ha, yay for me, I guess I might use him this year as an injury replacement and the el-releaso. Imagine that, the one time I get a free agent it's the time I don't bother to make sure the guy is in the NHL. Oh well.
